Hamburg calls Keegan 'one of the best' after England great dies

German football club Hamburger SV paid tribute on Monday to former player Kevin Keegan after the England great died at the age of 75 following a battle with cancer.

“The Bundesliga club mourns one of the best footballers ever to wear the club’s diamond crest,” Hamburg said in a statement.

“With Kevin Keegan’s passing, world football loses one of its most influential figures. Hamburger SV will always cherish the memory of their former title-winning player and two-time Ballon d’Or winner.”

Keegan played for Hamburg from 1977 to 1980, helping the club win the Bundesliga title in 1979.

His family announced in January that he had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing treatment. Confirming his death on Monday, they said Keegan was surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments.
