The Ibom Model Farm is heavily inspired by the world-renowned Songhai Farm model – a zero-waste, highly integrated system that combines livestock, crop production, aquaculture, and processing on a single ecological footprint.
“We began this project by providing the farmhouse,” Governor Eno stated. “The farm is now going to be managed by Akwa Ibom State University, and the Ministry of Agriculture will perform the supervisory role. You can see the ambience of the farm; this is what we expected. People should be able to come here and relax. This is agritourism. Apart from food, some things will be happening here.”
Decentralised Expansion Across Three Senatorial Districts
The current facility serves as the foundational template for a broader, state-wide agricultural decentralisation strategy.
Governor Eno disclosed that identical model farms have already been planned for replication across Akwa Ibom’s three senatorial districts to unlock localised competitive advantages.
Reflecting on the integration of the project into the state’s master plan, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr Offiong Offor, emphasised that the initiative perfectly drives the administration’s blueprint.
“The goal is to provide food security in line with the ARISE Agenda, where the ‘A’ stands for Agricultural Revolution,” Dr Offor noted.
By embedding the university’s agricultural faculty directly into a commercial production ecosystem, the state government aims to transform the institution into a self-sustaining asset while providing students with practical, market-driven agricultural experience.
