The Federal University Gashua (FUGA) has pledged to strengthen its collaboration with the Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria (RRIN), Gum Arabic Sub-Station, Gashua, to advance research, training and development in the sector.
The Vice-Chancellor of FUGA, Professor Yaqub Ahmed Geidam, made the commitment on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, when he led the university management and members of the FUGA Green Code Committee on a visit to the RRIN Gum Arabic Sub-Station in Gashua.
Geidam said the visit was aimed at reciprocating an earlier engagement by the institute and re-energising the existing relationship between both institutions.
He noted that the activities of FUGA’s Centre for Gum Arabic Research and those of the RRIN sub-station were closely related, stressing the need for both institutions to work together for mutual benefit and the advancement of research and development in Nigeria.
“We are here to give you confidence that this particular management will collaborate with a lot of energy with the station so that we benefit each other,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
Geidam also used the occasion to formally invite the sub-station to the official launch of the FUGA Green Code, scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026.
According to him, the Green Code is designed to promote environmental sustainability among students, ensuring that graduates leave the university not only with academic qualifications but also as ambassadors of environmental responsibility.
The Vice-Chancellor assured the institute that FUGA was open to further collaboration with the Gum Arabic Research Centre and other units of the university, while appreciating the institute for the warm reception accorded his delegation.
Responding, the Director/Officer-in-Charge of the RRIN Gum Arabic Sub-Station, Gashua, Dr I. F. Ojiekpon, expressed delight over the visit, describing it as an opportunity to strengthen the longstanding relationship between the institute and the university.
Ojiekpon said RRIN and FUGA had complementary mandates, explaining that while the institute focuses primarily on research, the university combines teaching with research.
He identified training and capacity development as key areas for collaboration, noting that the institute had over the years invited university staff to participate in its training programmes.
The visit featured a presentation on the RRIN Gum Arabic Sub-Station, Gashua, after which the Vice-Chancellor and his delegation toured the station’s nursery.
Members of the delegation included the Registrar, Dr Abubakar Mamuda; Bursar, Mallam Muhammad Ahmed Ali; Director of Works, Engr. Adamu Janga; Chairman of the FUGA Green Code Committee, Prof. James Ishaku Dantata; and other members of the committee.
The renewed engagement is expected to strengthen institutional collaboration and promote research, knowledge exchange and capacity development in Gum Arabic and related areas.
