Frostproof boys golf struggled to be consistent as a team all season. There were a couple rounds when everyone played well but overall, there were more rounds of inconsistency.
Despite it all, Frostproof head boys golf coach Karen Bolin’s team was still ranked No. 1 in Class 1A heading into the Florida Class 1A Public School Golf Championship Friday at Quail Heights Country Club in Lake City, but she also knew the Bulldogs needed to play well in order to win.
Well, that’s exactly what happened.
The local group put up a 316 to claim first place and a back-to-back public school championship on Friday. Leading the group to a win was The Ledger’s 2025 Player of the Year, Jordan Castillo, who shot a 72, clinching his second straight public school individual championship.
“Winning back-to-back was very rewarding,” Bolin said. “Our kids put in a lot of work and to see them come out on top is very rewarding.”

The most critical holes for Castillo were Nos. 12 and 18. He was 3-over when he made the turn and knew he had some ground to make up after missing a very makeable birdie putt on the par-5 ninth hole.
On the 12th hole, Castillo executed a 15-footer after hitting a safe wedge shot to a pin on a ridge. When it was time for the 18th hole, he knew he was down one and knew he likely needed a birdie to get into a playoff or even win outright. So, he would go on to make a 60-yard wedge shot that he hit to 10 feet or so and sank the putt to force a playoff. The rest was history.
Castillo continues to utilize his resources to be one of the best golfers in Polk, one of which is his very own sister in Frostproof all-county golfer Hanna Castillo.
“Hannah and I spend a lot of time practicing 100 yards and in working on making 2s, which can help to make birdies and pars,” Castillo said. “It feels really good to win back-to-back years both as an individual and as a team. The last two years I have gone to a playoff and won on the first hole. I have really learned to refocus after a few bad holes or a bad 9 and just focus on making pars and birdies, (which) will come.”
Bolin knows what kind golfer she has on the team.
“Jordan continues to improve year after year. He has grown and is hitting the ball further. His touch around the greens is so impressive and comes through clutch for him,” Bolin said.
