The No. 24 Florida Gators are making a quarterback change as they enter the final month of the season. Tramell Jones Jr. will get the start against the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday night.
Jones will make his second career start. Coach Jon Sumrall declined to officially name a starter Monday, but adjusted the depth chart to list Jones and Aaron Philo with an “or” designation. This move comes after Philo was benched during Saturday’s 27-8 loss to Georgia.
The former four-star threw two interceptions before giving way to Jones, who also committed two turnovers of his own in a terrible loss. Florida’s offensive line struggles have complicated the evaluation. Sumrall said the pressure on the quarterbacks has made it difficult to assess their performances.
Jones previously stood out to the Gators coaching staff and looked impressive in his first career start, leading Florida to a road win over then-No. 9 Texas last month. He completed 22 of 35 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns without an interception.
Florida hopes this will revamp the offense. Jones has completed 70.8% of his passes for 579 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions this season.
The Gators (5-3, 3-3 SEC) will try to become bowl eligible for the first time under Sumrall. The Sooners (4-4, 2-3 SEC) will try to stay afloat as the season enters the final stretch.
