While The Lincoln Lawyer season 5 will be the Netflix show’s final outing, the legal drama also has the unique challenge of being pitted against another series based on books by the same author, Michael Connelly. Recently, Prime Video’s Reacher franchise expanded to include the spinoff show Neagley, which followed Maria Sten’s title character as she investigated the suspicious death of an old acquaintance.
It is impressive for any book adaptation to become as successful as Reacher, and even more impressive that the Prime Video series managed to spawn a spinoff. Even ABC’s acclaimed Karin Slaughter series Will Trent has not yet earned a spinoff, and that cop drama has been on the air for four seasons. However, author Michael Connelly has pulled off an even more impressive feat with the arrival of 2027’s The Lincoln Lawyer season 5.
First introduced in 2005 by Connelly’s original novel of the same name, The Lincoln Lawyer is a series of eight novels that have been adapted to the screen twice, first as a movie starring Matthew McConaughey in 2012 and then as a Netflix show starring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo in 2022. The franchise’s titular unconventional attorney Mickey Haller is the flawed hero of the series, but arrival of the Bosch prequel Bosch: Start of Watch means Connelly will be competing with his own adaptation next year.

Not only does The Lincoln Lawyer season 5 arrive on Netflix in March 2027, but the outing will mark the show’s final season, as it was already canceled by the streaming service earlier this year. Since Haller’s professional and personal struggles have been reliably dramatic and unpredictable since he first earned his nickname by operating his legal practice out of the boot of his Lincoln town car, The Lincoln Lawyer season 5’s March 2027 arrival will be an exciting final chapter for Connelly fans.
However, Prime Video’s Bosch is also set to return to screens only two months earlier, with the long-awaited prequel Bosch: Start of Watch premiering on January 10, 2027. While Connelly has penned eight Lincoln Lawyer novels, the author has written no less than 25 Bosch books, with another on the way before 2026 ends. The irascible LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch is Connelly’s most recognizable fictional creation, and he hasn’t been seen onscreen since 2025’s Ballard.
Arriving on Prime Video back in 2014, Bosch was arguably the most influential police procedural from the 2010s outside of HBO’s True Detective season 1. Gritty, dark, and brutal, Bosch took the grounded realism of crime dramas like The Wire and fused it with the reliable procedural format of network TV hits like CSI and Law & Order. The result was a brooding character study that made star Titus Welliver a household name, and Bosch: Start of Watch is set to revive the beloved franchise.
Bosch: Start Of Watch Has An Advantage Over The Lincoln Lawyer
However, although Welliver reprised the role in both the sequel series Bosch: Legacy and the spinoff Ballard, his busy schedule means he won’t appear in Bosch: Start of Watch. Instead, Gotham‘s Cameron Monaghan will play the young Harry Bosch, marking a new start for the popular franchise.
Since Bosch: Start of Watch is just beginning while The Lincoln Lawyer has already been canceled, the latter show’s limited future could make its final outing less appealing to viewers. Fortunately, neither Bosch: Start of Watch season 1 nor The Lincoln Lawyer season 5 will spell the end of Connelly’s screen adaptations. Ballard season 2 will continue star Maggie Q’s Bosch spinoff, while The Lincoln Lawyer will also receive an upcoming spinoff later in 2027.
However, for The Lincoln Lawyer season 5, the Bosch prequel’s timing could definitely have been better. As the upcoming Michael Connelly series Bosch: Start of Watch offers viewers a fresh new look at the author’s best known character, The Lincoln Lawyer‘s swan song may be a comparatively tough sell.
