Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake – How To Use The Pro Controller To Its Full Potential

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, interestingly, typically gains something by arriving on a new platform. When it hit GameCube, we got the Master Quest through a bonus Wind Waker disc, which wowed hardcore fans everywhere and opened up a brand-new way to play.

On 3DS, fans got a few slight changes and some quality-of-life upgrades, especially for equipping items and gear quickly. Now on Switch 2, there are even more nuances, including ways to make the most of the new sprint mechanic. Here’s how to utilize a lesser-used Switch 2 feature to your advantage in Ocarina of Time.

Remap The Back Buttons With Ease

You may have used your Pro Controller on Switch 2 without ever having the GL/GR buttons, and that’s completely OK. That said, if you’ve never used GL/GR mapping before, you’ll want to explore it for Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

The main reason it’s great for this entry is that you can run without having to “claw-hand” your way to other buttons. Instead, you can rest your left or right hand on the GL/GR button on the back of the controller to sprint continuously, leaving both hands free to press whatever button you need and maneuver around.

This is especially great for dungeons, since you may need to sprint across an arena to avoid an attack, then snipe an enemy quickly with a key item. If you’re pressing down a face button to sprint, it can be tougher to micromanage all of Link’s abilities on the fly.

GL/GR can be mapped on a Joy-Con 2, with the Charging Grip attached.

To map the GL/GR buttons, open up Ocarina of Time (it doesn’t matter if you’re at a menu, as long as the game is loaded). Press and hold the Home button on your controller to open a hidden menu for button mapping, plus options for brightness, sound, flight mode, and, of course, GL/GR mapping.

Select that option, then select the button you want it to correspond to. If you want, you can save and load specific mapping options, but only for player one. Since Ocarina is a single-player game, this isn’t an issue you’ll run into.

For whatever reason, if your Switch 2 isn’t updated to version 19.1.0 or higher, you’ll need to go another route to alter GL/GR mapping. Go to the Home menu, then select System Settings, then Controllers & Accessories, and GL/GR Buttons Settings.

Use Remapping With Unique Items

The sky is the limit for remapping buttons, but you may want to consider options like running/rolling/sprinting, as well as items like the Iron Boots. Sprinting is an obvious candidate, but sometimes it helps to pop specific pieces of equipment with an extra button, since you won’t always be able to reach the D-pad.

For The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time fans, controls mostly stay the same across versions, except for an extra menu on 3DS. Now, you can use GL/GR if you need to on this Switch 2 exclusive.
