FG directs varsities to expel students linked to kidnapping

Beyond security measures, the minister announced that the Federal Government would support security-related projects in tertiary institutions through the 2027 intervention programme of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, including perimeter fencing and other critical security infrastructure.

He also reaffirmed plans to expand the Energising Education Programme in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Power, noting that institutions requiring additional electricity capacity could benefit from enhanced solar energy and battery storage facilities.

Earlier, the Pro-Chancellor of the Federal University of Lafia, Lola Akande, acknowledged the Federal Government’s support for the institution but identified inadequate hostel accommodation, electricity challenges at the university’s second campus and insecurity as key concerns.

She disclosed that the university had received reports linking some students to kidnapping activities carried out off campus, adding that the institution remained firmly opposed to the payment of ransom because it encouraged criminal behaviour.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Mohammed Kida, also commended the Federal Government’s education reforms and appealed for the extension of the Energising Education Programme to the university’s second campus. He further requested additional office accommodation and increased staffing support.

Responding to the requests, Alausa advised the university to submit formal proposals under the relevant intervention programmes, assuring the management that projects aligned with national priorities and established guidelines would receive appropriate consideration.

The minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening campus security, expanding infrastructure and improving the quality of tertiary education as part of efforts to build a globally competitive higher education systems.

The directive comes amid renewed efforts by the Federal Government to improve security in educational institutions following years of attacks by kidnappers and other criminal groups, particularly in parts of northern Nigeria.

In recent months, the Federal Ministry of Education has intensified collaboration with security agencies under the Safe Schools Initiative while also pursuing reforms focused on infrastructure development, digital learning, improved electricity supply through the Energising Education Programme and increased investment in tertiary education through TETFund.

The meeting with the Federal University of Lafia also reflects growing concerns over criminal activities involving some students outside campuses, prompting the government to call for stronger surveillance, intelligence gathering and disciplinary measures across Nigeria’s higher education institutions.
