Lionel Messi is set to play one final game for the Argentina national team on October 6 after confirming his retirement.
Messi, who took his country to the 2026 World Cup final and lost to Spain, announced he would be stepping away from the international stage at the very end of August.
There was then much speculation about a potential farewell game, but it has now been confirmed that he will play one last match against Benin at the Monumental, in Buenos Aires on October 6 during the upcoming international break.

Fabrizio Romano was among those to share the news, and many fans have since reacted to his post about Messi’s last match to have their say.
One wrote: “The greatest chapter in Argentina’s history deserves the greatest goodbye.”
A second stated: “One last night at the Monumental. Messi and Argentina. It really doesn’t get much bigger than this.”
“October 6 will officially mark the end of pure football magic. The Monumental won’t have a single dry eye! Gracias Leo,” commented a third.
Another tweeted: “Monumental has seen plenty of nights, but this one will sit differently for anyone who grew up watching him wear that shirt.”
A fifth claimed: “The greatest international career of all time ends with a packed Monumental… against Benin. Perfect.”
And another wrote: “October 6 at the Monumental. That’s the proper place to end it. Full house, home shirt, last night in that national team.”
Ahead of his final game for Argentina, Messi has 125 international goals to his name, the second most behind Cristiano Ronaldo (146).
He also played a key role in Argentina winning the 2022 World Cup as well as the Copa America in 2021 and 2024.
