Kaley Cuoco’s new HBO Max series How to Survive Without Me won’t be pulling its punches.
The family drama series explores the aftermath of matriarch Beverly De Angelis (Rita Wilson) dying and Cuoco playing her daughter, Kate. As the family struggles to move forward and drifts apart, they are brought back together by something Beverly left behind, forcing them to reconnect. Ray Romano plays Beverly’s widowed husband, Leo, while Joshua Jackson plays Kate’s brother, Cooper. The show received a 15-episode series order from HBO Max and a $21 million tax credit from the state of California.
In an interview with Variety at the Airbnb.org Gala in Los Angeles, Jackson teased that “it’s HBO, so it’s sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll.” He joked, “I’m getting too old for this s***. I gotta keep it together,” and added while patting his stomach that “I hope this show’s on for a couple of years, but if the pilot and the first couple of episodes are anything to judge by, I gotta really stay on top of things.”
Jackson also provided more insight into the plot and how exactly Beverly brings her family back together: “The show starts six months after the matriarch of this large family has passed away, and because she was the glue that held this family together, she writes a book for her children that they can only read when they’re together. So from beyond the grave she reaches out to her five adult children and her husband to make sure that the family stays together.”
While HBO is known for sometimes featuring more violence and explicit sexual content, How to Survive Without Me has previously been described as a family drama and meant to follow a model akin to network television with 15 episodes a season, yearly releases, and a modest budget. This makes Jackson’s “sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll” description of the show somewhat surprising, along with how physically demanding it is, but also hints that the show will not shy away from difficult topics while exploring grief.

Casting Cuoco, a key member of The Big Bang Theory cast, is only one way that the show is relying on network television veterans. Jackson has starred in shows like Dawson’s Creek and Doctor Odyssey, while Romano was famously the lead star of Everybody Loves Raymond. The series was also co-created by Greg Berlanti, who has extensive network television experience. Robbie Rogers and Bash Doran are the other co-creators.
With The Big Bang Theory airing on CBS, there were more limits on what the sitcom could do. What How to Survive Without Me can get away with on HBO Max won’t be new territory for Cuoco, though, having already starred in the streamer’s Flight Attendant, Harley Quinn, and Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. Peacock’s Based on a True Story and MGM+’s Vanished also had their fair share of violence and sex scenes that aren’t permitted on network television.

While Cuoco, Jackson, Romano, and Wilson play four of the key characters in the De Angelis family, other relatives will be played by Julia Schlaepfer, Jack Ball, Kylar Miranda, Julian Grey, Scarlett Abinante, Tommy Dewey, Matthew Kellison, Colette Porch, and Ella Rubin. As for guest stars, they include Dar Zuzovsky, Genevieve Angelson, Joe Romano, Katie Aselton, Katie Monds, Kevin Changaris, Pressley Hosbach, Richard Blackmon, Sofía Rodríguez-Toymil, and Will Yun Lee.
The model of 15-episode seasons, returning annually, and maintaining a modest budget for How to Survive Without Me is inspired by HBO Max’s the Emmy Award-winning medical drama series The Pitt, which has succeeded in these areas and become a major hit, all while avoiding many of the criticisms of other streaming shows. Another HBO Max series following this model was attempted with a police drama series titled American Blue, which shot a pilot episode, but the streamer did not give it a series order.
