Growing up around performers, storytelling was always central to Emma’s life. Add in a nerdy older brother who introduced her to Marvel at far too young an age, and her love for entertainment led her to pursue a Journalism degree at Indiana University, where she discovered her passion for entertainment reporting. She spent nearly one year in Los Angeles covering industry stories and fully immersing herself in the world of entertainment media.
A fan-favorite Girls character will not be returning for Lena Dunham’s upcoming HBO revival.
Created by Dunham, Girls originally aired for six seasons from 2012 to 2017, following four young women navigating relationships, careers, and friendships in New York City. HBO recently announced that the series would return for a five-episode revival, reuniting several original cast members. However, one of the show’s biggest breakout stars has now confirmed that he won’t be joining them.
Per CinemaBlend, Adam Driver confirmed that he will not reprise his role as Adam Sackler in the upcoming Girls revival. The actor, who was promoting his new movie Paper Tiger, was asked directly whether he would return to the HBO series. He responded:
“No, but I wish them the best of luck.”

Driver played Hannah Horvath’s on-again, off-again boyfriend throughout the original series, with their complicated relationship becoming one of the show’s central storylines. Adam was also among Hannah’s best and worst boyfriends, as their romance was frequently marked by unpredictable behavior and conflict. His performance helped launch his career before he went on to portray Kylo Ren in the Star Wars sequel trilogy and earn Academy Award nominations for BlacKkKlansman and Marriage Story.

Although Adam’s relationship with Hannah ended before the original series concluded, he remained connected to the main characters through his romance with Jessa Johansson, played by Jemima Kirke. With Kirke confirmed to return, it remains unclear how the revival will address Adam’s absence or whether his relationship with Jessa will be revisited.
In her recent memoir Famesick, Dunham reflected on her complicated working relationship with Driver during the original series. She described the actor as occasionally short-tempered and verbally aggressive, while also recalling moments when he was protective and affectionate. Driver has not publicly explained his reasons for declining to return to the revival.
According to HBO’s official announcement, Dunham will reprise her role as Hannah alongside Allison Williams as Marnie Michaels, Kirke as Jessa, and Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro. Andrew Rannells is also returning as Elijah Krantz, while Judd Apatow will once again serve as an executive producer.
Dunham previously explained that she only wanted to revisit Girls if there was a specific story worth telling. The upcoming revival will take place approximately a decade after the original finale, allowing the series to explore how its central characters have changed since their twenties. Although Driver’s absence has now been confirmed, it remains unclear whether Adam Sackler will be mentioned or how his relationship with Jessa will be addressed.
The five-episode Girls revival is scheduled to begin production in 2027, with no premiere date announced.
