Fans have been waiting a long time for Fallout 5. 11 years of waiting since the release of Fallout 4, to be exact. It’s not likely that fans will be waiting another decade for a new game in the popular Bethesda series, as the TV show brought new interest to the post-apocalyptic Fallout universe.
The Fallout series has been a gaming staple for almost 30 years, with the original game releasing on PC in 1997. It and its vault dwellers have seen a great deal of evolution through the series’ iterations, from a classic CRPG isometric perspective with the first and second games; to more modern first-person action RPG gameplay seen in Fallout 3, New Vegas, leading to its (current) final refinement with Fallout 4 in 2015.
In a recent interview with the BBC, Bethesda’s Todd Howard touched on where the series is to go with Fallout 5. Specifically, whether the upcoming game would be reflective of the Amazon Prime television series. Specifically, Howard went on record stating that:
Fallout 5 will be existing in a world where the stories and events of the show happened or are happening. We are taking that into account.”

It seems fans of the show may see some familiar areas in Bethesda’s upcoming RPG. It’s also possible the developer may include some familiar faces, but that’s no guarantee.

It almost feels like a given that players will come across at least New Vegas or the Boneyard, but it’s possible they may be mere mentions. A smaller town like Filly or Shady Sands may be easier to work into the game, unless the Boneyard or another larger location in the TV series is an integral part of the plot in Fallout 5.
Further in the interview, Howard states that those who watch the show won’t necessarily be indicted into the Fallout game series, but they, “still get to experience Fallout.” It seems increasingly likely the TV series will play into the next game, if for nothing else than to keep continuity.
There is still no release date set for Fallout 5. Actually, there’s no indication at all as to when the game might be released. Starfield released in 2023 after a full eight years of development, as a full standalone universe for players to explore. It’s been over a decade since the release of Fallout 4, and Bethesda have a much brighter and heavier torch to bear with the series than a new IP.
Fans haven’t seen a new Fallout game since 2015, but it’s clear that Bethesda are still working on the classic game series. This should be especially true now, with the Prime TV show being exceptionally popular and bringing new eyes and interest to what the Wasteland has to offer in terms of lore and entertainment. It’s possible that the Fallout 5 release is still a few years off yet, but at least fans know now that the show will somehow play into the upcoming title and should be taken into consideration with the official game lore.
