Everton fans have been talking ahead of facing Newcastle United on Thursday night in the Carabao Cup.
Fair to say the mood isn’t buoyant…
After the opening day of the season, Everton fans have only seen their team win one Premier League match and that was scraping a 1-0 home victory over Ipswich.
Playing poorly and negatively, Scouse Mackems have lost 2-0 at home to Chelsea and 2-0 at Arsenal in their most recent couple of games.
Intriguing to hear what they are saying ahead of facing United tomorrow night…
Everton fans commenting via their Grand Old Team message board:
‘This will be the 4th time Moyes his faced a Premier League team in a cup competition since his return.
The Previous 3 games have all ended up as us being the defeated team.
Two of them have been at home.’
‘Reserves for this.
Got to preserve the squad for the battle against the drop.’
‘It’s a must win to prevent things getting toxic for Moyes’
‘Could be toxic if them barcodes score first’
‘This and the next one against them in the league are two big games.
Losing twice (to Chelsea and Arsenal) is permissible, but continue to perform like that will be toxic.’
‘We don’t have a squad for a serious cup run. Part of me wants us to put out the second string because I’m worried about injuries.’
‘We don’t have a second string.’
‘Doing it in the last 16 would be one of the most baffling things I’ve ever seen. Makes a few changes yes but not wholesale changes. We don’t even have a second string. We have 18 players.’
‘Can’t really be any excuses for holding back. Newcastle aren’t much cop and concede a lot.’
‘Last two were not good enough, but it was Chelsea and Arsenal. This is a Newcastle team that’s struggling. Anything less than coming out and having a right go at them would be a disgrace. None of this feeling our way into the game or setting up to counter their strengths. Go out and have a proper go at them.’
‘Good job we haven’t given them 7k tickets with our morale and form right off where they need to be!?!’
‘Season over. Not even November.’
‘Moyes will forfeit this game as we can’t possibly try to stay in the league and win a trophy.’
‘Or do either.’
‘I genuinely wonder what the point is these days. Even if we beat Newcastle, we play a top 6 team later in the competition, which at some point we will, and we lose. Football feels so pointless these days.’
‘Really important in the sense that a win should get some confidence back into the side.
But we’re not actually going to win anything with Moyes. The first decent side we play in this/FA Cup, we’re toast.’
‘I have a feeling Newcastle will rest a fair few players for this game.’
‘And still win.’
‘Big game. Newcastle can beat us but we should beat them really. Unfortunately our run is negative just like the football. Going to be another painful watch.
Even if we win.’
‘We’ll be out by Thursday night. Focus on staying in the league.’
‘If we play like we have been, with the majority of the players that have started then Newcastle will have an easier night than they should. ‘
‘Huge game for Moyes this, a meek cup exit would see the anger against him ramp up.’
‘Let’s see what prehistoric team and tactics Moyes employs for this one then’
‘Quiet sad exit…need to save energy for key relegation battles…’
‘When you’re only ambition is simply to stay in the league you have ask what the hell is the point.’
‘This game looks sold out but they’ve given a larger than necessary allocation to Newcastle and they haven’t sold there’s. What was the point of that?’
‘My Barcodes mate tells me he tried to get a ticket 3 days ago and was told it was sold out.’
‘Ah ok. Must have the wrong info then.’
‘At least we won’t drop any points on Thursday.’
‘Newcastle have been terrible this season. I don’t want to hear a single excuse about why we shouldn’t be beating these at home.’
‘Terrible but still ahead of us..’
‘I’d tell Barry it’s an away game and send him on the train to Newcastle.’
‘Part 1 of a double dose of our favourite hysterical ferrets from the North East.
This one is live on Sky Sports, swiftly followed by the joy of being their Monday night game too.
Whatever you do don’t get humiliated once, never mind twice, by the Geordies and their weird manager who looks like a poster child for every third rate MBA ever awarded.’
‘…..I’m feeling much less positive about this than I was when the draw was made.’
‘I should not but somehow I have the collywobbles about this one. Lets be honest if we don’t win the cup game we won’t win the league game. We do not have the mental fortitude for that. So lets make sure we win the cup game to give the lads a chance in the league match’
‘Home advantage should seal this for us. I think we’re better than them anyway, but 4/5ths of the stadium behind the team should get us over the line.’
‘Wouldn’t mind a change in goal for this. Pickford hasn’t been on it and if any set of fans can get in his head more than most, it’s the horse punchers.’
‘I don’t think they will consider sacking until we slip into the bottom three.’
‘If we fail to score 2 goals in this game it’ll be very disappointing. Newcastle are a traffic cone in defence.
I don’t care if we lose 5-3. Just do something going forward.’
‘Arsenal out. Game just got bigger.’
‘Nightmare for Moyes that. Even more expectation and pressure on Thursday now.
Could be horrific if we draw Bradford or Fleetwood tomorrow in the draw.’
‘Our season basically depends on winning this game. If we go out then its just another season of scraping by and trying to avoid relegation without anything else. I know we’d still have the FA Cup to play for, but let’s get real, the same thing will happen there. This is realistically the only trophy we have a chance of winning or even doing well in. Its a chance to create some momentum and positive form. The importance of tomorrow night simply can’t be underestimated.’
‘.its not inconceivable that 5 of the 8 teams in 1/4 finals will be lower than us in the league, 2 will definitely be from a lower division. Only certainty is the winners of Man City v Brighton and RS v Chelsea are above us but even then, 2 of those clubs will be going out.’
