When Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie sends classyLane Johnson formally announced his retirement from the NFL amid his 14th season, it marked an inflection point in Philadelphia Eagles history.

One of the best players to ever wear a midnight green uniform at his position, Johnson has a resume worthy of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and was, by all accounts, a great teammate too, which team owner Jeffrey Lurie highlighted in a very touching message after his announcement, celebrating the man and the player for everything he’s done for the City of Brotherly Love.

“Lane Johnson is an all-time Eagle and one of the best players ever to play his position in NFL history. Lane was a major contributor to our team success for 14 seasons, helping to bring two Super Bowl championships and many other memorable moments to the organization and the city of Philadelphia,” Lurie wrote.

“Lane excelled under multiple coaching staffs, maintaining an elite level of play throughout his entire career. His combination of talent, strength, athleticism, and intelligence made him a truly unique player in this league, and there is no doubt in my mind that one day he will be named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

“Beyond his on-field accomplishments, Lane has done a tremendous amount to give back to the community through his numerous charitable endeavors. The courage he has shown using his own personal experiences to advocate for mental health awareness has undoubtedly saved lives.

“We appreciate everything Lane has contributed to our organization, and we wish him and his family nothing but the best.”

Through three weeks of action, Johnson was on his way to another incredible season, ranking fifth among 69 qualifying tackles in overall grade, third in pass blocking grade, and 11th in run blocking grade, according to Pro Football Focus. While that sample size is small, only 181 snaps, it proved that Johnson could very much still play midway through his 30s, making his decision to hang up his cleats all the more shocking.

With Markel Bell in place, who Johnson endorsed as his eventual replacement, the Eagles may soon find themselves with an almost entirely new offensive line from the one that helped win a Super Bowl two years ago, which is a stark reminder of how quickly things can change in the NFL.
