Eagles have a clear salary cap edge with NFL’s second-cheapest defense

Championship windows rarely stay open forever. The NFL is designed that way. Teams draft well, develop young talent, win games, and eventually face the difficult reality that success becomes expensive. In many ways, they’ve already lived both sides of it.

Philadelphia won a lot of football games while Jalen Hurts was earning the type of salary attached to a second-round rookie contract. Once he received his massive extension, Howie Roseman adjusted accordingly. Rather than panic, he built one of the league’s youngest and most affordable defenses through the draft.

The strategy worked, but time has flown. Young stars are nearing massive paydays of their own. Still, Philadelphia can enjoy a slight advantage for a little while longer.

According to research compiled by Warren Sharp, the Eagles currently field the NFL’s second-cheapest defense at roughly $84.4 million. Only the Miami Dolphins devote less money to that side of the ball. Again, that’s an enormous roster-building advantage.

While other organizations spend premium dollars on veteran defenders, Philadelphia is receiving elite production from players still on rookie contracts. Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith, Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, and several others have allowed the Eagles to remain competitive without sacrificing roster flexibility elsewhere.

Only the Dolphins are spending less on defense in 2026.

That’s exactly how championship-caliber rosters are built in the modern NFL. The problem? As mentioned earlier, success eventually gets expensive, and the bill is coming due for a loaded Eagles team.

The Eagles have already exercised the fifth-year option for Jalen Carter, and they have done the same for Nolan Smith. Everyone, however, understands that those decisions merely delayed the inevitable. Carter, in particular, appears destined to become one of the highest-paid defensive players in football whenever his next contract arrives.

He won’t be alone. Philadelphia currently has 24 players entering contract seasons in 2026. Moro Ojomo is among them. Beyond that lies an even bigger challenge.

The Eagles are rapidly approaching the point where they’ll need to begin planning for Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean. Both enter contract years in 2027, though Mitchell’s status as a first-round selection gives Philadelphia the flexibility of a fifth-year option.

Howie Roseman’s next balancing act is forthcoming. His reputation will soon be tested again. Finding stars is difficult. Keeping them all is impossible. At some point, the Eagles will be forced to decide which players represent foundational pieces and which ones become cap casualties of success. That’s the price every great team eventually pays.

For now, Philadelphia continues to enjoy one of the NFL’s biggest competitive advantages. The defense is young, talented, and remarkably affordable. The challenge facing the Eagles isn’t building that unit. They’ve already done that.

The challenge now is determining how much of it they can afford to keep together once paydays begin. Roseman will work his magic. The rest of us have the easy jobs, kicking our feet up and enjoying the magic show.
