Dune 3‘s actors are standing behind some major changes the movie is making to its source material.
After adapting Frank Herbert’s original Dune novel across two movies, director Denis Villeneuve is returning with the officially-titled Dune: Part Three, which adapts 1969’s Dune Messiah. This will serve as the final installment of Villeneuve’s Dune trilogy, picking up almost 20 years after Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides overthrew Emperor Shaddam IV and seized control of the Imperium. As with any adaptation, Dune 3 has tweaked the Messiah story to make it more palatable for cinematic audiences and conform to Villeneuve’s vision.
In an interview with The New York Times, Zendaya, who reprises Chani, acknowledged that while there’s “a lot” in Dune 3 that “is very true to the source material,” there are also “departures.” Robert Pattinson, who plays Scytale, added that, “You got to be kind of crazy if you’re going to be picking fault with this one [over the changes to the books],” then said:
The script was really cool, but it was quite complicated. And watching the film, it’s not about what I thought it was going to be about at all. It reads as much more of a grand political, moral fable, and the movie is so much more emotional. A lot of it is about parenting, and I just thought it was so moving.

Chalamet also said during the interview that he was “absolutely” satisfied with how Villeneuve wrapped up the Dune trilogy, noting that he “didn’t feel like the bar dropped at all, Denis just changed the location of the bar. This movie is its own thing.” The gap in time between Dune: Part Two and Dune: Part Three is one of the biggest changes in the movie, as Dune Messiah took place 12 years after Dune. Zendaya’s Chani is also being depicted as one of the conspirators against Paul, whereas in Messiah, she remained loyal to him.
Dune 3 sees Paul Atreides facing the consequences of his ruthless reign across nearly two decades, as a movement grows from the shadows to remove him from power. Other familiar faces from the previous movies include Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Florence Pugh as Ireland, Charlotte Rampling as Reverend Mother Mohiam, Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, and Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck. Jason Momoa also returns as Hayt, a ghola who looks like the late Duncan Idaho.

Along with Pattinson coming aboard as Scytale, a Tleilaxu Face Dancer who leads the conspiracy to overthrow Paul, Isaach de Bankolé’s Farok, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa’s Leto II Atreides, and Ida Brooke’s Ghanima Atreides are among the other newcomers in Dune 3‘s cast. In addition to his directorial duties, Villeneuve co-wrote the new movie’s script with Brian K. Vaughan. The movie filmed from July 8, 2025, to November 11.
Dune 3 opens in theaters on December 18, the same day as Avengers: Doomsday. Villeneuve’s previous two Dune movies, as well as the prequel TV series Dune: Prophecy, are available on HBO Max.
