Drew Brees believes his NFL career could have included several more Super Bowl rings if a few critical moments had gone differently. The New Orleans Saints legend spent 20 seasons in the NFL and finished his career with one Super Bowl victory.
However, looking back, Brees believes at least three or four of his Saints teams were talented enough to win it all. And he has a seemingly concrete reason for the claims.
Drew Brees Highlights a Potential Reason Behind His Super Bowl Record
Brees’ argument is partly based on the unforgiving nature of the NFL postseason. Unlike the NBA or MLB, where playoff series provide opportunities to recover from a bad performance, the NFL uses a single-elimination format. That meant one mistake, unlucky bounce or controversial decision could end an otherwise championship-caliber Saints season.
Brees shared his perspectives during a recent episode of the Get Got Podcast.

Brees experienced that reality several times during his career. After joining New Orleans in 2006, he helped transform the franchise into a consistent contender. The Saints won seven NFC South titles, made nine playoff appearances and reached three NFC Championship Games during his tenure.
His greatest achievement came in the 2009 season. Brees led New Orleans past the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 in Super Bowl XLIV, earning Super Bowl MVP honors after completing 32 of 39 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns.
However, several later Saints teams came agonizingly close to another championship. The 2011 Saints remain one of the most notable examples. New Orleans went 13-3 and produced 7,474 total yards, still an NFL record for a single season. Brees and the Saints then lost 36-32 to the San Francisco 49ers in a dramatic Divisional Round matchup.
The 2017 season brought another heartbreaking ending. New Orleans appeared headed toward the NFC Championship Game before Minnesota’s Stefon Diggs caught the famous last-second touchdown against the Saints. One year later, another controversial moment changed the franchise’s postseason fortunes. The Saints lost the NFC Championship Game to the Los Angeles Rams in overtime after a missed pass interference call late in regulation.
Brees also viewed the 2020 Saints as legitimate championship contenders. New Orleans reached the Divisional Round but lost 30-20 to Tom Brady and the eventual champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Those losses help explain why Brees believes his career could have looked dramatically different with slightly better fortune.
The Saints had the talent to compete with the NFL’s best throughout his prime. Yet the narrow margins of playoff football repeatedly prevented Brees from adding to his lone Lombardi Trophy. Ultimately, Brees’ comments are less about regret than recognizing how difficult sustained championship success can be. His Saints teams regularly reached the postseason, but turning elite regular seasons into Super Bowl victories proved much harder.
