KC Concepcion is quickly becoming too valuable for the Cleveland Browns to keep him in one lane. The rookie has already flashed as a pass catcher and runner, and now head coach Todd Monken is seriously considering adding punt returns to the mix.

That creates an obvious risk. Every extra special-teams snap gives a first-round offensive weapon another chance to take a hit. However, Monken’s answer, reported Saturday, August 29, by ESPN’s Daniel Oyefusi, made the Browns’ thinking clear: they want Concepcion involved as much as possible.

Monken has already seen enough from Concepcion to view him as more than another rookie receiver. The 24th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft has made an impact in multiple ways this preseason, including a 31-yard punt return and a 14-yard rushing touchdown on a jet sweep.

Now, the Browns are weighing whether that versatility should extend to regular punt-return duties. The concern is obvious: Concepcion is expected to be a major part of the Browns’ passing game, so exposing him to additional contact carries some downside.

That philosophy fits what the Browns have seen from Concepcion since draft night. He is not simply a receiver who can occasionally take a gadget snap, but a rookie who has the quickness to create separation, the burst to turn short touches into chunk plays, and enough toughness to make things happen after the catch.

It also explains why his role could reshape the Browns’ roster decisions. Cleveland has several receivers competing for limited spots, including Gage Larvadain, Tylan Wallace, Luke Floriea, and Malachi Corley. If Concepcion takes over punt-return responsibilities, the team may have more freedom to keep a traditional receiver elsewhere on the depth chart.

That is a much better problem than the Browns had last season. Their WR group finished near the bottom of the league in production in 2025; however, the organization attacked the problem aggressively. Concepcion and second-round pick Denzel Boston now give the room a young injection of playmaking ability, while Jerry Jeudy remains an established option.

The bigger question is how much of that talent the Browns can actually unlock. Quarterback play remains the obvious variable, with Deshaun Watson currently positioned to start and Shedeur Sanders still part of the bigger picture.

For Concepcion, though, the assignment is becoming clearer. The Browns do not want to wait for him to become a polished NFL receiver before using him but want the ball in his hands now.

And if Monken follows through, Concepcion could enter his rookie season as a receiver, runner, and returner, giving the Browns a weapon it can move all over the field.
