DC Confirms Return Of Its Most Hardcore Green Lantern

A very different type of Green Lantern hero makes his return in 2027 alongside a famous DC villain. DC’s most famous Green Lanterns have earned their spot in legend thanks to impressive feats of power. For example, Hal Jordan famously manifested a functional Green Lantern ring out of his own pure willpower and once channeled enough raw energy to recreate his entire destroyed hometown of Coast City. Later on, John Stewart built construct-shields capable of holding together a solar system and once tried to rebuild an entire shattered planet from scratch. However, there are many other Green Lanterns who have been overshadowed by human members of the Corps.

DC’s most often overlooked Green Lanterns include none other than Alan Scott, the original Golden Age Green Lantern, whose mystical Starheart magic was explained to be a different source of power than the rest of the Green Lanterns’. Similarly, Abin Sur is mainly recognized for the singular act of dying to pass his ring to Hal Jordan, which overshadows his century-long legacy as one of the cosmos’ greatest investigators. Unique alien heroes like the blind rotating-crystal Lantern Rot Lop Fan, who doesn’t even comprehend the concept of light or color, are relegated to occasional novelty cameos despite possessing some of the most fascinating concepts and designs.

Six years after his most notable appearance, one of these underrated Green Lanterns makes his return in a team-up DC title.

Green Lantern Vath Sarn Returns To DC Comics In 2027

The Flash artist Carmine Di Giandomenico teams up with Tony Fleecs in his debut as a DC writer for 2027’s next chapters of Deathstroke: The Terminator, where a de-armored Slade Wilson forges an unexpected alliance with the Green Lantern Vath Sarn in Sector 2682 to destroy a dangerous intergalactic underworld cartel. Drawing inspiration from buddy-cop adventures, Deathstroke: The Terminator‘s next arc throws Vath Sarn back into cosmic law enforcement alongside a deadly assassin with a complex moral code and brutal mercenary tactics, which naturally clash against Sarn’s rigid adherence to the Green Lantern Corps code.

Created by Geoff Johns, Dave Gibbons, and Patrick Gleason, Vath Sarn was introduced in 2005’s Green Lantern Corps: Recharge as a no-nonsense soldier from the planet Rann. Sarn was drafted into the Green Lantern Corps mid-combat during the Rann-Thanagar War, where he partnered with the Thanagarian recruit Isamot Kol. After appearances in Green Lantern crossover events like the Sinestro Corps War and Blackest Night, Vath Sarn evolved from a deeply prejudiced planetary grunt into an indomitable symbol of cross-species unity within the Corps. Similarly to his team-up with Isamot Kol, Deathstroke: The Terminator forces Vath Sarn to join forces with a very different partner.

DC’s Non-Human Green Lanterns Need More Time In The Spotlight

Not All Major Green Lantern Heroes Should Be Human

DC’s line-up of Green Lantern protagonists has expanded drastically since the days of the Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner trio. Years after the debut of Kyle Rayner, DC integrated Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Jo Mullein, Jade, and Keli Quintela in major roles. However, the DC Universe spans thousands of sectors, each populated by countless bizarre alien societies. There must be dozens of non-human and non-terrestrial Green Lanterns with excitingly unique abilities and backgrounds, plus lore-heavy origins that could provide DC’s Green Lantern mythos with a breath of fresh air and a break from Earthly heroes.

Vath Sarn is only one existing example, and he still looks and behaves quite similarly to the human Green Lanterns. Green Lanterns like the brutal trainer Kilowog, the brilliant avian strategist Tomar-Re, the living virus Sodam Yat, the plant-based hive-mind M’Tend, and the living planet Mogo are all fan-favorites, but they rarely have received the same prominent roles as their human colleagues. Vath Sarn may not become a permanent co-protagonist in Deathstroke: The Terminator, but his appearance provides a refreshing perspective on Green Lantern duties parallel to the adventures of Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, and other active Lanterns.
