Dabo Swinney believes true freshman QB can challenge for starting job

There’s an old football adage that talks about having two quarterbacks really meaning that you have none, but Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney appears excited about the chance that true freshman Tait Reynolds could unseat fourth-year junior Christopher Vizzina atop the depth chart before the regular season begins.

“We all know the magnitude of these decisions. We’re not stupid,” Swinney said, per ESPN. “But that’s why we didn’t go get the big shiny object out of the portal. We believe in (Vizzina). But we also believe in Tait. He’s a high-level dude, now. He’s special.”

This could be coach-speak, with the intention of motivating both players to step up their game before the opener. Swinney admitted that both players are going to need reps, as neither has an established resume at this level. Vizzina has been with Clemson since 2023 but has only thrown 105 career passes.

“Neither one of them have great experience, so at the end of the day, if CV’s 1, he’ll run out there first,” Swinney said. “If Tait’s 1, he’ll run out there first. We just have to go through the process and see how it all works out.”

Reynolds appears to be the more imposing physical specimen, although he’ll need to show poise beyond his years to win the starting job.

“He’s built like a linebacker,” said Clemson star linebacker Sammy Brown of Reynolds.

This will be one of the more compelling QB battles to watch in the ACC as the summer unfolds.
