Colts training camp battles: Evaluating backup QB competition

Training camp for the Indianapolis Colts kicks off in about a month, so as part of our preview of what’s to come, we will be evaluating each positional battle that is expected to unfold.

What took place during offseason programs laid the foundation for each of these competitions and provided us with some insights into where things may stand. That said, what takes place during training camp and the preseason will ultimately determine who wins these roles.

Let’s start with the quarterback position.

Anthony Richardson and Riley Leonard are competing for the backup role behind Daniel Jones.

Shane Steichen made it clear during OTAs and minicamp that at that stage of the competition, neither Richardson nor Leonard had the early edge over the other. The two will continue to split reps, with each seeing time with the first-team offense during offseason programs, while Jones was not yet participating in 11-on-11 team drills. Steichen has also said that this competition will go on throughout the summer.

As far as we know, Richardson’s trade request is still on the table. Not long after training camp begins, there is a “soft deadline,” as The Athletic’s James Boyd called it, that could play a key role in facilitating a trade. So for now, my guess is that the Colts eventually end up trading Richardson, making Leonard the backup. The Colts like Leonard, and it’s getting to the point with Richardson where Chris Ballard either has to get something in return or let him walk next offseason for nothing.
