Carson Hocevar Loves NASCAR Promoting Brad Keselowski Feud: ‘Good for the Sport’

Carson Hocevar’s run-in with Brad Keselowski isn’t disappearing quietly into another NASCAR race weekend.

World Wide Technology Raceway is making sure of that.

The track has leaned into the tension between the two drivers ahead of Sunday’s Enjoy Illinois 300, including promotional posters featuring Hocevar and Keselowski around the facility. Instead of bristling at seeing his latest controversy used to sell the race, Hocevar had almost the opposite reaction.

It reminded him of home.

“I think it’s a good promo,” Hocevar said Saturday in a clip shared by veteran reporter Jeff Gluck. “It’s old, old school.”

For the 23-year-old Chase contender, watching a NASCAR track turn a genuine driver conflict into part of the buildup for its race brought back memories of the short-track racing he grew up around in Michigan.

And if the attention surrounding Hocevar and Keselowski gets people outside NASCAR’s usual audience interested in what happens Sunday, Hocevar sees that as a win for the sport.

Carson Hocevar Sees Some ‘Old School’ Racing Promotion at Gateway

Hocevar grew up racing at Kalamazoo Speedway, where rivalries weren’t necessarily something promoters tried to hide.

He recalled watching Ben Rayburn and Bubba Brooks repeatedly tangle on track. Hocevar’s father sponsored Rayburn to some degree, and Hocevar remembers car owner Gary Howe eventually trying to get everyone together to stop the drivers from tearing up equipment.

There was just one problem with asking them to cool things down.

“My dad was like, ‘OK, that’s great, Gary, but, you know you might want to take your posters down on the front gate promoting Bubba versus Ben,'” Hocevar recalled.

The parallel isn’t difficult to see.

Hocevar spun Keselowski during the Southern 500 at Darlington last weekend, prompting a pointed warning from the RFK Racing driver afterward.

“His day’s coming and it’s coming hard,” Keselowski said after the race. “Watch out, Carson.”

Now NASCAR has arrived at Gateway with the possibility of another chapter hanging over the weekend. The track hasn’t exactly shied away from it.

“So that kind of reminds me of that a little bit,” Hocevar said of his childhood memory. “So now we’re just doing it on Sunday.”

He admitted he was surprised to see the promotion, but he enjoyed it, even if he had one critique.

“I thought it was cool,” Hocevar said. “I was a little disappointed they used the AI poster out front if I’m being honest. But I thought I was glad to see this one.

“They, you know, photoshopped it at least a little bit.”

Hocevar Believes the Attention Is Reaching Beyond NASCAR Fans

Hocevar’s interest in the reaction isn’t limited to what he’s seeing at the racetrack.

He has also noticed how heavily the storyline is being pushed to him on social media.

“I happened to scroll on TikTok or whatever and I’m pretty much my whole For You page,” Hocevar said. “I’m like, gosh, like it’s just me on my own page.”

One video, he said, had surpassed 1 million views.

Hocevar went a step further and looked through the comments to see who was actually engaging with the content. What caught his attention was that the audience didn’t seem limited to people who already follow NASCAR closely.

“You can tell that it’s not normal NASCAR fans that were getting it on their algorithm,” Hocevar said. “So I have to imagine that’s good for [the sport].”

That’s what separates this weekend from a typical post-race disagreement.

Keselowski hasn’t backed away from the possibility that something could happen. Asked Saturday how he plans to race Hocevar, he said it would “play out however it plays out.” Hocevar, meanwhile, enters Sunday’s race 12th in the Chase standings with considerably more at stake from a championship perspective.

Whether anything actually happens between the two remains to be seen.

But the buildup itself has already become part of the show.

And for a driver who grew up watching short tracks turn genuine rivalries into reasons for fans to buy a ticket, that feels familiar to Hocevar.
