Vancouver Whitecaps FC are storming to the finish line of the 2026 MLS regular season.

With a resounding 4-1 win over San Diego FC at BC Place and other results going their way on Wednesday night, the ‘Caps solidified their lead atop the Western Conference table (58 points).

With that, Jesper Sørensen’s side are closing in on securing the No. 1 seed in the West and, thus, home-field advantage all the way through the 2026 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs and possibly the Dec. 18 final.

“I just have a good feeling about how we played. I know that everybody’s focusing on the standings and stuff,” Sørensen told reporters postmatch. “Last year we lost our last game and came in second instead of first, and it looked to be going up against.

“So it’s more, it’s more important how we play and play.”

Historic display

A year on from reaching the MLS Cup and Concacaf Champions Cup finals, the Whitecaps are looking to take a step further in 2026.

With their four goals on Wednesday, they have smashed their club record for goals in a season, reaching 67 with two games to spare.

Summer U22 Initiative signing Aleksa Cvetković got things started early, finishing off a penalty box sequence with for first MLS goal. Talisman Brian White headed home just before halftime to double the lead, and Ryan Gauld extended the scoreline to 3-0 early in the second half.

Superstar Designated Player Thomas Müller was also introduced in the second half, marking his return from injury after almost a month out and adding an exciting boost to Vancouver’s attack.

Young Ecuadorian star Bruno Caicedo added the exclamation point with the record-breaking goal in the 76th minute, finishing off a fast break with his sixth tally of the season. The 21-year-old winger was named 15th on the league’s 22 Under 22 last week, and is quickly emerging as one of the MLS’ most exciting young prospects.

White’s milestone

White’s first-half goal was his 18th of the campaign, but more importantly, it was his 100th career MLS goal. The former Red Bull New York SuperDraft pick has come into his own since moving to Vancouver in 2021, and now deservingly sits among the league’s top strikers amid a career-best 18g/2a in 2026.

“Something I’ve always wanted to get to and had my eyes on, if I’m being honest, to get to 100 goals,” said White. “But at the end of the day, you want to win championships with the team to see like those things are nice, like you said, but you want to win MLS Cup.

“I would win MLS Cup, and that’s first and foremost on my mind.”

Vancouver need just one more win to secure the top seed in the West, with which they ensure home-field advantage in the playoffs at least up until the conference finals.

It would also secure qualification to the 2027 Champions Cup.

They’ll have two chances to do so, traveling to Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday (3:30 pm ET | Apple TV) before hosting CF Montréal on Decision Day.

“We are ready to attack the last two games,” said Sørensen. “And hopefully that will be enough also to win the Western Conference regular season.”
