Carson Hocevar Had Michigan in His Hands, Then Watched It Slip Away

Carson Hocevar spent most of Saturday afternoon looking like the driver to beat at Michigan International Speedway.

The Michigan native led a race-high 65 laps in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race and repeatedly showed the speed needed to deliver a hometown victory. Instead, Hocevar left with a third-place finish and a lingering feeling that an opportunity had slipped away.

Corey Heim ultimately claimed the victory after a dramatic final-lap battle with Tricon Garage teammate Kaden Honeycutt, while Hocevar crossed the line behind them after spending much of the race at the front of the field.

For Hocevar, the result was difficult to accept.

“Obviously I want to win,” he said afterward. “I want to win here.”

The frustration was evident. While many drivers would have gladly taken a podium finish, Hocevar was focused on what might have been.

“I’m just disappointed in myself.”

Hocevar Dominated Much of the Afternoon

The final results do not fully tell the story of Hocevar’s race.

Driving the No. 77 Chevrolet, he controlled large portions of the event and led more laps than any other driver in the field. Michigan has long been one of the races he wanted most, and the home-state crowd had plenty of reasons to believe Saturday could finally be the day.

Instead, the closing laps turned into a battle between Heim and Honeycutt, with the two Tricon Garage teammates fighting for the win while Hocevar was left trying to recover lost track position.

By the time the checkered flag flew, Heim had secured his fifth Truck Series victory of the season, Honeycutt finished second, and Hocevar was forced to settle for third.

A Different Standard for a Home-State Driver

Part of what made Hocevar’s reaction notable was the standard he set for himself.

A third-place finish would qualify as a strong day for most drivers. Hocevar, however, viewed the race through a different lens because of what was at stake.

Michigan is his home track. The opportunity to win in front of family, friends, and hometown supporters does not come around often.

That reality made the result sting more than the finishing position suggested.

Hocevar leaves Michigan with another strong performance on his résumé and proof that he had one of the fastest trucks in the field. But when the race was over, the Michigan native was not thinking about speed, laps led, or a top-three finish.

He was thinking about the trophy that got away.

The good news for Hocevar is that his Michigan weekend is not over. After coming up short in Saturday’s Truck Series race, he’ll get another opportunity in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series event, where he’ll once again try to deliver a hometown victory in front of the same fans who spent much of the afternoon cheering him on.
