A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Dino Melaye, has criticised the practice of Nigerian government of appointing people to ministerial positions that do not align with their professional expertise.
Speaking during an appearance on the KAA Truths podcast, Melaye said carpenters are doing the jobs of tailors in Nigeria.
He highlighted how a lawyer was assigned Minister of Power, Works and Housing in the previous administration.
According to him, such misalignments lead to inefficiency and failure in tackling critical national issues.
“We are here when a carpenter is taking over the job of a tailor. He will not survive. At a time in this country, a lawyer was the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, NNPC. A veterinary doctor was Minister of Health in this country.
“Look at Fashola. First of all, I love him. Fantastic man. Brilliant, fantastic lawyer. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria. But it was a misnomer to carry a lawyer and make him Minister of Power, Works and Housing. Three professional ministries given to a lawyer. What has law got to do with Power, Works and Housing? He’s not an engineer.
“Before he will understand the nitty gritty or the technicalities involved, four years is gone, and these civil servants that we have in Nigeria, they will screw him. Before you understand anything money is gone,” he said.
