Blumhouse’s New Hit R-Rated Horror Movie Officially Sets Digital Release Date

Blumhouse’s new R-rated horror movie has been a box office smash hit, going on to gross $108 million worldwide after being made on a reported production budget between $18 and $19 million. Jessica Chastain plays the dual roles of mother Ursula Martin and an evil entity who looks like her known as Other Mommy. Ursula attempts to protect her daughter from this nefarious force in the adaptation of Josh Malerman’s 2024 novel Incidents Around the House.

When the trailer started playing ahead of The Odyssey in July, Other Mommy quickly gained attention for the jump scare that happens when the titular character appears in a contorted position underneath a table. This set the stage for the box office success that occurred following the movie’s theatrical debut on October 9.

Despite being a financial hit, the reviews have been largely negative. The film holds a 19% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes based on 100 reviews, along with a 48% audience score based on more than 1,000 verified ratings. In ScreenRant‘s Other Mommy review, Josh Bate gave the movie four out of 10 stars and wrote that “the audience immediately has all the answers to the film’s story, even before they’ve met a single character . . . Nothing is scary about Other Mommy, and only the film’s very first sequence is even slightly creepy.”

Chastain’s performance is one area of the movie that has been praised, including the critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes declaring that “despite a valiant turn from Jessica Chastain as the spectral embodiment of a smothering parent, Other Mommy proves too silly for its intermittently effective jump scares to add up to a spooky whole.”

For those who may have been dissuaded from seeing the movie in theaters due to the bad reviews, the digital release now provides an opportunity to watch at home through rental or purchase. A streaming release date has not been set yet, but when it is, the film is expected to go to Peacock since it is owned by NBCUniversal.

Other Mommy was directed by Rob Savage, with a script written by Nathan Elston, James Wan producing, and Malerman as an executive producer alongside Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Ryan Lewis. In addition to Chastain and Clark, the cast includes Jay Duplass, Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed, Karen Allen, Sean Kaufman, Adam Silver, and Alec Secăreanu.

Other Mommy makes its digital debut on November 10.
