Marvel Studios Brings Back Thanos' Black Order With A Shocking Twist

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for VisionQuest episode 7.VisionQuest‘s new episode marks the end of an era for the Marvel Cinematic Universe series, as this is the first time that the Disney+ show releases a single episode, rather than two. Next week, episode 8 will mark the end of VisionQuest, setting up Tommy Maximoff, Vision, Ultron, and more for new MCU adventures. On last week’s VisionQuest episodes, the live-action MCU TV show brought back Raza, a villain connected to the shadowy Ten Rings organization who made his debut in the franchise’s very first project, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, back in 2008. Raza was unable to take Vision.

VisionQuest episodes 5 and 6 also touched on whether Ultron was fully behind Jocasta’s plan to enslave humanity, which the Marvel series’ new hour further explores. Lisa Molinari was the first victim of Jocasta’s nanotechnology, and it could lead to her Marvel Comics fate, with the character becoming a villain Tommy will have to deal with. In VisionQuest‘s new episode, the MCU has finally turned to the comics to shine the spotlight on an underrated character that has a long history in the franchise, while also putting two major VisionQuest players in danger ahead of the series finale next week.

The Client Finally Shows His Face

One of the biggest secrets in the MCU series has been related to the identity of The Client, the mysterious character that keeps sending bounty hunters like Paladin and Raza after Paul Bettany’s Vision. Disney+’s VisionQuest finally answers the question of who The Client is, at least partially. Over the course of six episodes, fans came up with different theories for whom the character might be, with some of the debated names including Jim Hammond, Marvel Comics’ first Human Torch, and Captain America franchise villain Arnim Zola, among others. However, The Client turned out to be none of those.

At the end of the episode, The Client is revealed to be played by none other than James Spader, the MCU’s Ultron actor. The character’s name is not revealed in VisionQuest episode 7, with Marvel leaving that part of the surprise for the series finale to unwrap. However, given that Spader plays him, the MCU has already revealed who The Client is, partially. He is the human that the Ultron AI based his human design on. Much like how E.D.I.T.H. discovered in past episodes that she was based on Stark Industries test pilot Edith Marks, the other AIs follow a similar pattern.

Did VisionQuest Just Kill Two Major Characters?

VisionQuest episode 7 sets up the finale with two major characters’ fates hanging in the balance. One of them is F.R.I.D.A.Y., who seemingly fell to her death after Ultron threw her off a balcony inside Jocasta’s mind. That said, it would make no sense for her to die here. After all, Ultron previously showed that he was not fully onboard with Jocasta’s brutal plan for humanity. Additionally, in the Marvel series’ new episode, Spader’s MCU villain reveals to F.R.I.D.A.Y. that not only did he know she was hiding in Jocasta’s mind, but he was actively hiding her from the new Marvel foe.

It was always Ultron’s plan to find out who was behind Jocasta’s creation, but nowhere did it seem like he wanted to really kill F.R.I.D.A.Y. as part of his course of action, so she might still be alive despite how the fall looked. The other character in trouble heading into the VisionQuest finale is Paladin. The bounty hunter went from a foe to a friend of sorts in episode 7. After delivering Vision to The Client, just like Bettany’s MCU hero wanted him to, The Client’s security team hit Paladin’s van with a missile. Following the TV rule of “no body, no death,” he could still be alive.

Marvel Comics’ First Human Torch Fully Makes His Way To The MCU

After being teased multiple times in past episodes, VisionQuest episode 7 finally brought in the first Human Torch from Marvel Comics, who goes by the Synthetic Man in the MCU, J.I.M. The android was created by scientist Phineas Horton a couple of years after he lost his son, James, serving as a stronger replacement who would not leave the saddened character so easily. However, Horton’s obsession with crafting J.I.M. eventually led to his wife and young daughter, Victoria, leaving him. Horton is played by an aged up Paul Bettany, confirming that he is the one who inspired Vision’s human persona.

Bettany ends up pulling triple duty in the latest episode of VisionQuest, as not only does the actor give life to Vision, but also to Phineas Horton and J.I.M., with the latter helping White Vision understand that he and the original Vision are one and the same. Previously, he kept referring to that Vision as the original and the one who experienced love with Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, but by looking deep within his mind and understanding where Horton and J.I.M. failed, he embraces all sides of himself. Horton died being consumed by fire alongside J.I.M. when the latter lost control after being sent spinning when he found love.

Thanos’ Black Order Plays A Surprising Role In VisionQuest Episode 7

VisionQuest episode 7 also continues the trip down memory lane for Vision with a not so happy memory. While Thanos and the Black Order might no longer be part of the MCU, Marvel Studios just brought back a powerful weapon one of them wielded in a creative way that perfectly fit the story being told in the Disney+ series. Vision needs an immensely powerful power source to be able to tap into the depths of his code to find Phineas Horton and J.I.M. He ends up going after Paladin for help, and the bounty hunter possesses the perfect item.

Corvus Glaive’s scepter/spear, the very same weapon that he used to impale Vision in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, returns as the modified power source that allows Vision to find exactly what he needs to not only accept himself but also save Lisa Molinari. It is a fitting way to reinterpret something from Vision’s past to serve his present journey, which is all that VisionQuest is about. Now, it remains to be seen how all these threads will come together when VisionQuest episode 8 releases on Disney+ on November 10.
