If you’re a longtime Battlestar Galactica fan that’s been following the franchise since the beloved 2004 reboot ended, it’s been a seriously long and winding road (also, kudos for sticking around). When the critically acclaimed sci-fi series concluded in 2009, it left behind an incredible legacy that few television shows have managed to replicate.
Unfortunately, the years since haven’t been particularly kind to the franchise, with spin-offs like Caprica struggling to recapture the original’s success and multiple attempts at reviving the property either stalling or falling apart entirely. Most recently, the highly anticipated Peacock reboot was officially shelved, leaving fans wondering whether the franchise would ever get another opportunity to return to its former glory.
Nevertheless, Battlestar Galactica‘s passionate fanbase has kept the series alive, and their patience might finally be paying off. Now, an unexpected announcement has confirmed that Battlestar Galactica is officially making a major comeback in 2027, bringing back a beloved piece of the franchise’s history that fans have been eagerly awaiting for years.
After nearly two decades, one of tabletop gaming’s most beloved sci-fi releases is officially making a comeback. Ghost Galaxy has announced an agreement with Universal and Fantasy Flight Games to produce a new edition of Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game, with a crowdfunding campaign planned for early 2027.
Originally released in 2008 and designed by Corey Konieczka, the game brilliantly translated the television series’ paranoia and political intrigue into a cooperative survival experience with a hidden-traitor twist. Players assume the roles of familiar characters aboard Galactica, working together to survive Cylon attacks, manage dwindling resources, and protect humanity’s remaining survivors.
However, one or more players could secretly be Cylons, sabotaging the crew from within, and makes for a truly one-of-a-kind and must-try board game experience for fans of the genre and the BSG franchise itself. It’s been established as a tabletop classic ever since its release, despite sometimes wonky mechanics, and is lauded even among players who weren’t particularly familiar with the television series.

The original received three expansions, Pegasus, Exodus, and Daybreak, but eventually went out of print, making full collections quite expensive and highly sought-after. Its return is significant given that Ghost Galaxy CEO Christian T. Petersen also originally founded Fantasy Flight Games and oversaw the game’s initial release.
Unsurprisingly, the announcement has generated a wave of excitement across the board gaming and Battlestar communities. On Reddit’s board game sub, PsychicPterodactyl called this one “an insta-buy,” although they intend to wait for a retail release rather than participate in the 2027 crowdfund.
Meanwhile, tapion91 described the original as “a masterpiece,” and is hopeful that the new edition addresses some minor balancing issues. For jibbyjackjoe, the announcement was bittersweet, with the user revealing they’d just completed their original collection for a whopping $700 (yikes).

However, not everyone is completely sold on the proposed changes. Lazverinus warned that the original’s mechanical “quirks” were part of its appeal and is urging fans to reserve judgment until more details emerge.
For now, pricing, expansion content, and an actual release date are still unconfirmed, and Ghost Galaxy expects to launch the crowdfunding preview page in the coming weeks, potentially introducing an entirely new generation of players to one of Battlestar Galactica‘s most beloved adaptations.
