Jose Mourinho has a difficult decision approaching at Real Madrid, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Denzel Dumfries competing for the right to start one of the biggest fixtures on the club’s calendar.
On that note, the October 25 El Clasico against Barcelona could become the defining moment in a contest that remains far from settled.
For now, neither defender has established himself as the undisputed first choice, as Mourinho has used both considering the requirements of the game.
So far this season, the Dutchman has enjoyed more opportunities, although Mourinho’s selection policy suggests the battle remains open.
Dumfries leads Trent in minutes but faces competition
The numbers currently favour Dumfries. He has accumulated 505 minutes for Real Madrid, compared with Trent’s 292, giving the former Inter defender a significant advantage in playing time.
However, Mourinho has continued to rotate the position rather than commit to one candidate, while also using the Englishman in midfield once this season.

That approach leaves both players with an opportunity to strengthen their case during a demanding run of fixtures, beginning with Villarreal at the Bernabeu.
Notably, Dumfries also returned from international duty with a substantial workload behind him.
He started all four matches for the Netherlands, playing 350 of a possible 360 minutes. Although he failed to register a goal or assist, his involvement alone was considerable.
Trent Alexander-Arnold returns with a point to prove
Trent’s international break followed a different path. After missing out on England’s World Cup squad, the right-back returned to the national setup and featured in two matches, both victories against the Czech Republic.
He provided an assist in England’s 2-0 win before featuring again in a 3-0 victory.
His passing range and comfort in possession remain important assets for Real Madrid, particularly when the team needs to progress the ball against opponents who press aggressively.

With 170 fewer minutes played than Dumfries over the period in question, Trent could have an opportunity to start against Villarreal, and a decision in his favour would indeed give him a chance to close the gap before the fixtures become more consequential.
El Clasico could decide Mourinho’s right back choice
Real Madrid’s schedule leaves little room for either player to relax, as Villarreal are followed by Roma, Sevilla and Leipzig before the meeting with Barcelona on October 25.
That Clasico could carry particular weight in Mourinho’s decision-making.
The chosen right-back will face the challenge of containing Lamine Yamal, whose movement and attacking threat demand concentration as well as sound defensive positioning.
Dumfries currently has the stronger case on minutes, while Trent offers a different dimension in possession, and more importantly, experience against the Barcelona youngster.
Mourinho has reasons to value both profiles, but only one can occupy the starting role against Barcelona.
