Andoni Iraola Provides Latest on Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo

Andoni Iraola has confirmed a double injury blow ahead of Liverpool’s clash against Manchester City.

Both Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo picked up injuries during the international break and both are set to miss Sunday’s clash.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Andoni Iraola said: “Alex Isak and Cody Gakpo will not play the game. They are not ready.”

“In this case we have been unlucky. Both of them are injured and they won’t be involved on Sunday.”

“Cody has an ankle injury and has had some before in his career. It’s about dealing with the pain. It was a really bad tackle.”

“Alex has a thigh injury. A small injury, but still an injury. They don’t look like long-term injuries but they won’t play on Sunday.”

Who Could Start?

The injuries to Gakpo and Isak, on top of ongoing issues with Hugo Ekitike and Federico Chiesa, leaves Liverpool short for options in attack.

Iraola now has just Bradley Barcola, Victor Munoz, Rio Ngumoha and Lewis Koumas to choose from.

The Spaniard mentioned the latter of those names as a potential replacement for Isak in the striker role.

He said: “Koumas has our trust. We don’t think it’s a big surprise, I have always liked the player and he has already shown he is ready to go.”

“We have other players that can cover these positions, but we will see…”
