The Los Angeles Rams added to their practice squad this week by signing former All-Pro linebacker Erick Kendricks. It was an unexpected move, especially with Nate Landman and Omar Speights locked in as the starters.
But Kendricks brings valuable experience and insight to the linebacker room, which Sean McVay is excited about.
During Thursday’s press conference, McVay explained the decision to sign Kendricks and talked about how he already displayed an impressive understanding of the defense in his first walkthrough.
“Just the depth overall and really, you’re talking about a guy that’s played a lot of meaningful football,” McVay said. “He’s been a great player in this league. I remember even just watching him for all the years where he was such a stud at Minnesota. Then I remember watching the Philly-San Fran game where he comes in and he’s elevated off the practice squad and was a significant factor in a huge playoff win for the Niners. It’s good to be able to have him. You can see even in just the walkthrough, the ownership and understanding of all things defense. I’ve heard nothing but great things, know him a little bit and glad that he’s a part of the group.”
Kendricks only played three games last season for the 49ers, making one start. But he started both of their playoff games and made 19 total tackles, including three for a loss.
This is his 12th NFL season after entering the league as a second-round pick by the Vikings in 2015, so he has a ton of experience – especially after starting 143 games in his career.
Landman and Speights will continue to be the starters, but with Landman battling a shoulder injury and Grant Stuard also banged up, it can’t hurt to have some additional depth at linebacker.
