Barcelona has contacted Manchester City and Rodri’s representatives as it attempts to beat Real Madrid to the Spanish midfielder, according to L’Équipe.
Both Spanish clubs are reportedly prepared to pay similar fees, which could leave Rodri with the final decision over his next destination. Barcelona’s entry represents a major development in a transfer saga that had previously centered on Real Madrid.
The Catalan club has opened discussions with the relevant parties, but there has been no reported bid or agreement with Manchester City. The move should still be considered a transfer rumor while Barcelona establishes whether Rodri is prepared to join the club.
Real Madrid’s interest has been known for some time. Rodri previously opened the door to a Real Madrid transfer, and the Spanish club is believed to view him as a player capable of controlling its midfield for the next several seasons.
Barcelona can now offer him a different route back to Spain. The club needs another midfielder after Frenkie de Jong suffered a serious knee injury, and Rodri would immediately become the central figure in its midfield.
His contract situation also makes a transfer more realistic than it would have been during previous windows. Rodri’s deal with Manchester City runs until June 2027, leaving the Premier League club at risk of losing him for a reduced fee if he does not sign an extension.
Manchester City signed Rodri from Atlético Madrid in 2019, and he has since become one of the most important players in the club’s history. His winning goal in the 2023 Champions League final completed City’s treble, while his performances for club and country later earned him the 2024 Ballon d’Or.
The latest development leaves City facing interest from both of Spain’s largest clubs. If Barcelona and Real Madrid present comparable offers, the midfielder’s preference may decide whether negotiations progress with either side.
Status: Barcelona has contacted Manchester City and Rodri’s representatives. Real Madrid remains interested, and both clubs are reportedly prepared to offer similar fees. Rodri has not chosen a club, no bid has been confirmed, and there is no transfer agreement.
