Football has been around for more than 160 years, but it still manages to produce incredibly rare and unusual moments.
In Argentina, for example, the day’s bizarre incident saw fans invade the pitch to celebrate a title that never came.
And it slipped away in the cruelest fashion: a goal with the very last kick of the game.
Don’t worry, OneFootball will explain!
On Saturday (7), Di María’s Rosario Central beat Estudiantes Rio Cuarto 2–0 at home, and the “Canallas” fans invaded the pitch to celebrate what they thought was the Argentine league title (the annual championship awarded to whoever earns the most points across the Torneo Apertura and Torneo Clausura).
The problem was that at the legendary La Bombonera, Enner Valencia—yes, THAT one—scored with the last kick of the game to give Boca Juniors a 1–0 win over Defensa y Justicia, securing the Xeneizes’ 27th Argentine title.
Back in Rosario, the fans—both those who had invaded the pitch and those in the stands at the Gigante de Arroyito stadium—ended up mistaking Boca’s goal for what they thought was a Defensa y Justicia goal.
Boca Juniors were therefore crowned Argentina’s annual champions with 63 points (30 in the Apertura and 33 in the Clausura), compared with Rosario Central’s 62.
The highly unusual incident even drew comparisons to the infamous “Edenílson, 41 years old” moment (one Internacional fans would rather forget).
