- Automakers have reorganized their EV lineups since September 2025, when federal tax credits ended.
- Sagging demand, tariffs, and a new generation of EVs have also led to several product cancellations.

Tesla Model X
Acura RSX
The sedan — which was expected to hit the market at the end of the year before a sibling SUV reached dealerships — was a joint venture product between Honda and PlayStation-maker Sony. It featured a bevy of wild tech options: a customizable screen on the front bumper, lidar sensors, and a place to hold a car-connected PlayStation controller.
It was canceled a few months before its Ohio production was set to start, a “very unusual” move, Adam Bernard, founder of AutoPerspectives, told Business Insider.
It’s still available to race in Gran Turismo 7.
BMW i4
German luxury automaker BMW is phasing out the i4, per Car and Driver.
The i4 — a five-seat hatchback with a sedan-like profile (what BMW calls a “Gran Coupe”) — will end production by late 2026.
The model favored performance, reaching 60 mph from a standing start in as little as 3.7 seconds, with an estimated range of 268 to 333 miles.
It will be replaced by a new generation of EVs built on BMW’s coming “Neue Klasse” platform, which the company says will boost performance while lowering costs.
The closest successor, an electric i3 sedan, is expected to offer up to 440 miles of range.
BMW iX
BMW is also phasing out its iX electric SUV in favor of a next-generation model built on its “Neue Klasse” platform.
The iX — BMW’s midsize luxury EV — first hit US dealerships in 2021 as the company’s second all-electric vehicle. The five-seat SUV carried a price tag ranging from about $70,000 to over $100,000, with an estimated range of 290 to 360 miles depending on the trim.
The German luxury automaker is discontinuing the iX in the US, though it will continue selling the model in Europe. American dealerships are instead preparing for the arrival of the new iX3 midsize electric SUV, which is expected to reach showrooms this summer.
“We remain fully committed to electrification in the US,” a BMW spokesperson told BMW Blog. “This marks the beginning of the Neue Klasse era and the introduction of these technologies across our future portfolio.”
Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo
Porsche’s Taycan lineup is getting a refresh for the 2027 model year. Its Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo wagons are not part of those plans, the company confirmed to Business Insider.
The Taycan was Porsche’s first fully electric nameplate in the US, debuting in 2020 as a sedan. The low-slung Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo options with an extended roofline and a lift-up hatch reached American dealerships in 2021.
Still, station wagons are a dying breed in America, and Porsche says sales for both options never took off.
In a statement, the company said the wagon variants played a “minor role” in Porsche’s sales.
The Taycan sedan is back for 2027 with a larger battery, more exterior paint options, and a NACS charging port.
Polestar 3, 4
Polestar is pulling out of the US after the Commerce Department denied the EV maker authorization to sell new vehicles beginning with the 2027 model year.
The Swedish automaker, which is majority-owned by China’s Geely, was denied an exemption under the federal Connected Vehicle Rule, which restricts the sale of cars with software tied to China or Russia over national security concerns. The decision means Polestar won’t be able to sell new 2027-model vehicles in the US, though it can continue selling existing inventory and servicing current customers.
The decision stands in contrast to sister brand Volvo, which received authorization in May following discussions with US officials.
“The automotive industry is entering a new phase, based on regional dynamics,” Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller said in comments emailed to Business Insider.
Polestar also told Business Insider it was “too early” to say what the decision means for its South Carolina operations, where it builds the Polestar 3.
Honda Prologue
Honda’s only EV is walking the plank.
“Honda confirmed production of the Prologue will end at the completion of the 2026 model year,” a company spokesperson told Business Insider. “Sales will continue through early 2027 based on expected inventory.”
The Prologue was built on General Motors’ Ultium EV platform as part of a partnership between the two automakers. The partnership also built the Acura ZDX, Chevy Equinox EV, Chevy Blazer EV, Cadillac Lyriq, and Cadillac Optiq. The companies ended their joint EV efforts in 2023, citing higher-than-expected building costs and slumping consumer demand.
Honda has since shifted its focus toward hybrids.
The Prologue’s departure will leave Honda without an EV in its US lineup for the 2027 model year.
