Few pop culture icons hit as hard with nostalgia as the spinach-loving Popeye the Sailor Man. With a legacy spanning more than 97 years, Popeye remains one of the most beloved and enduring cartoon characters of the last century. Now, the iconic sailor is poised to make an epic comeback in more ways than one this Thanksgiving season.
Thanksgiving is now just a few weeks away, and alongside reflecting on everything we have to be thankful for and looking forward to family feasts, Americans also have the holiday-defining Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to enjoy. The annual parade is known for its performances, elaborate floats, and giant inflatable balloons featuring some of pop culture’s most iconic characters.
This year, however, will be particularly special. It will mark the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade’s 100th march and bring back a classic character to the balloon lineup: Popeye the Sailor Man, alongside the love of his life, Olive Oyl, and their adopted boy, Swee’Pea.
Popeye first appeared in E.C. Segar’s classic comic strip Thimble Theatre on January 17, 1929, quickly becoming one of the strip’s most recognizable characters.
Popeye made his Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade debut during the 16th annual parade in 1939, atop a float designed after his sailing vessel. His last appearance, however, came in 1968, nearly six decades ago. Now, fans can look forward to a brand-new float that combines elements of the original 1957 balloon design with a modern look, complete with Olive Oyl and Swee’Pea. A first-look rendering of the new parade float can be found below.
However, Popeye’s return to balloon form is far from the only notable way this iconic character is making a comeback. Fans can also look forward to a four-part comic strip series leading up to his parade return, and the first installment is below!

To celebrate Popeye’s return to inflatable form at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, King Features and Popeye comic strip writer Randy Milholland have teamed up to deliver a series of original gags featuring Popeye and his friends on the road to the parade. The four-part series will run in newspaper comic strips over four Sundays in November leading up to Thanksgiving Day.
The first strip in the series debuted on November 1, 2026, and can be found above. Rendered in full color, it features Popeye, Olive Oyl, and Popeye’s hulking, bearded rival, Bluto. In the three-panel strip, Popeye runs up to Olive with good news, telling her, “You, me, an’ Swee’Pea is gonna be in Macy’s Thanksgivin’ parade!” Bluto then pipes up, asking, “Why ain’t I invited?”
Olive responds, “Why would you be?” to which Bluto replies, “I make a lot of people thankful.” Olive then delivers the surprisingly hilarious punchline: “Thankful they aren’t you isn’t the same thing.” In just three panels, Milholland captures the charm and defining humor of Popeye and company, making us even more excited to see the next three strips, which will be released on November 8, 15, and 22.
Between this new limited comic strip series and Popeye’s return to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, this is shaping up to be a truly epic and nostalgic comeback for everyone’s favorite spinach-eating sailor.
