There are a plethora of members of the Bat Family, and each of them is unique in their own way. Dick Grayson is the charismatic and caring one. Barbara Gordon, Batgirl and later Oracle, keeps the team prepared and aware of everything happening in the field. Of course, there’s the father of the entire team, Batman (Bruce Wayne).
All three are mentioned because they’re easily the most recognizable members of DC’s Bat Family. Even people who don’t read comic books know who they are. That said, over the past decade, Cassandra Cain became one of the best characters in the family, and maybe in DC Comics.
Cassie Cain has been around for a bit, and it’s taken a while for her to become one of DC Comics’ most popular characters. This is good because, like any great thing, it’s worth waiting for. Now, 20+ years after her arrival, former codename Orphan and now Batgirl has become a first-rate character.

Cassie’s Character Arc Is Exemplary

The biggest step that was taken with Cassie came during James Tynion’s Detective Comics. Batman recruited her because she was at the tipping point of being a deadly villain or, as Batman put it, the best of them. The funny part about her becoming the latter is that the biggest jump came from an unlikely character, Clayface (Basil Karlo).
Cassie didn’t speak much at the time because her father and others who programmed her didn’t see the need. Clayface took it upon himself to teach her how to speak using things like Shakespeare’s plays. However, learning to speak was only part of what made this a major part of her growth.
Thanks to her lessons, Cassandra learned to express herself properly when Clayface was thought to have been killed. It was a crucial moment that was reminiscent of the first time readers saw Logan cry in Uncanny X-Men No. 173. Since then, seeing her express her emotions has become something comic book fans are used to seeing.

Cassie Is Consistently The Bat Family’s Best Supporting Character

During Detective Comics No. 934, Batman mentions that Cassandra Cain’s first language was violence. It made her one of the most dangerous people on Earth, but it left her emotional and personal growth stunted. That’s why her ability to make and keep friends is so impressive.
No matter where Cassie goes, she brings new people into her life. For instance, the aforementioned Clayface, Stephanie Brown, and Big Barda. The latter may be the best example of what her friendship means to others.
During Kelly Thompson’s Birds of Prey, Barda developed a respect and sisterly love for Cassie (whom she called Small Bat). Their bond was so strong that the New God would do anything to protect her. Over time, it seemed more like a sisterhood than a friendship. Considering that Barda believes she’s better than everyone (she is a god), that says a lot about what kind of person Cassie is.

Cassie Doesn’t Need Gimmicks Or Gadgets

Everyone in the Bat Family has some kind of gimmick or weapon that separates them from the others. Barbara Gordon has an abundance of tech in her Gotham Clock Tower base, Jason Todd has his guns, and Batman uses an assortment of bat-themed weapons and vehicles. Cassandra doesn’t need any of that.
Yes, Cassie uses the grappling hook and the Batarangs. They’re staples if you’re in the Bat Family. Nevertheless, she doesn’t use the various accessories like the others. Why? Because she doesn’t need them to be impressive or save the day.
When comic book readers think of the weapons Cassandra normally has, swords are probably the first thing that comes to mind. What’s impressive about that is she doesn’t normally kill while using them. That part is highlighted often in Tate Brombal’s Batgirl. A series that everyone should read if they want to know more about what’s going on in Batgirl’s life.

Cassie Is One OF The Few Bat Family Members With No Love Interest
Many comic book characters have someone romantic in their lives that makes both people better. Fans don’t have to look far within the Bat Family to see how true that is. There’s Batman and Catwoman, as well as Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon. In contrast, Cassie hasn’t had many consistent love interests, and they didn’t last long. Honestly, that’s a good thing.
Bringing a love interest into Batgirl’s life would be a mistake. For one, it isn’t part of her current growth. Tate Brombal’s current series has focused on Cassie learning to understand who she is and where she fits in the world. Bringing romance may slow or halt that progress. Second, who’s to say she wants to be in a relationship?
Comic book fans have speculated that Batgirl could be asexual or aromantic. It may be why fans have seen Cassie kiss and seem interested in people, but they haven’t worked out. While none of this has been confirmed in any DC comic, it would be cool to see someone from the asexual community represented on a major platform.

Cassie’s Understanding Of People Is Unmatched

Once again, Casandra comes back to language and how not having the grasp of speech made her amazing. As is shown in almost every issue of the current Batgirl, Cassandra can look at a person’s body and see determine if they’re lying, preparing to attack, and plenty of other things. This uncanny ability is partly why she rarely loses fights. She’s playing chess while even the best fighters are still playing checkers.
One of the hardest people for Cassie to read is her mother, Sandra Wu-San (Lady Shiva). Shiva has had most of the same training as her daughter and then some, and with more years of experience. Plus, Shiva spent most of her adult life fooling people. All of that has made her one of the best liars in the world.
Shiva’s skills force Batgirl to look harder at all the tells her mom is showing. For instance, she looked closely at Shiva’s neck to see how her heart was beating. That’s a trick people with super hearing use, and Cassie does it with normal eyesight.

Cassie’s Honor Always Stands Out

In a lot of ways, comic books are like wrestling. A character can lose to an opponent less skilled than them to make the other look good or further a storyline. This relates to Cassie because she’s reached a level of importance that losing a fight to her is a big deal when it serves a purpose. For example, her encounter with Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey No. 1.
This was one of the few times Batgirl couldn’t read what someone would do next. However, Harley knew she had no chance of winning. So rather than get beaten, she chose to make sure neither of them won. This made Quinn look good, but also saved Cassandra’s legacy as an elite fighter.
Later, we see how evolved Cassie is. Instead of seeing her as someone bad, she used this interaction to show that Harley was the right person for the mission. It proved that Batgirl can look beyond a person’s past and see the best in them. That’s an important part of a hero’s growth.

Cassie Has Unlimited Potential

As it was mentioned earlier, it can take a while for people to see a comic book character’s potential. For years, Deadpool was just a mercenary with jokes. Eventually, writers like Mark Waid, Joe Kelly, and Gail Simone came along, and depth was added to Wade Wilson. Today, he’s a beloved antihero who’s made billions at the box office. The same will one day be said for Cassandra.
As you’ve seen throughout this article, there’s more to Cassandra than being one of the deadliest people in comics. The problem that some heroes and villains fall into is when they’re nothing but fighters. Eventually, that will become boring because there’s an abundance of great fighters in comics. Cassandra Cain has become more than that, and we still haven’t seen the best of her.
Whether it’s a Batman crossover, Birds of Prey, or her own series, Batgirl has proven that DC Comics hasn’t come close to reaching her potential. Eventually, she’ll be a member of the Justice League and be a key reason why the universe is saved.
