When the Cleveland Browns traded Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams, most of the football world did a double-take. Apparently, that included at least one 49ers quarterback.
Backup quarterback Mac Jones admitted he initially thought the blockbuster deal was fake news when safety Malik Mustapha showed him a post on X that broke the news of the blockbuster trade.
“I was like, ‘Oh, that’s AI or whatever,'” Jones said, per ESPN. “I saw the blue check and I was like, ‘No, click on his profile.’ Then I was like, ‘Shoot, that’s crazy.’ Myles is a great player.”
It’s a relatable reaction. Garrett is a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year and one of the most dominant pass rushers in the league, and the idea of him landing with the divisional Rams that are already one of the better teams in the NFL is the kind of move that makes you question whether what you’re reading is real.
The rest of the 49ers responded the way you’d expect from veterans who know exactly what Garrett brings to a defense.
Trent Williams, one of the best offensive linemen in football, said the trade “sucked.” Tight end George Kittle acknowledged that Garrett is “going to be a huge challenge. Offensive line coach Chris Foerster called the trade “a little gut punch.”
Those reactions make sense. Garrett broke the NFL single-season sack record with 23 in 2025 and has topped double digits in eight of his nine NFL seasons. Now he’s headed to a Rams team that will face San Francisco twice a year, giving Los Angeles a genuine game-wrecker off the edge who can affect a game regardless of scheme or situation.
Jones’ initial disbelief might have been funny in the moment, but by the time the 49ers face Los Angeles, nobody in that building will be laughing about it. Fortunately for the quarterback, he’ll only need to face Garrett if Brock Purdy gets injured.
