Of all the science fiction shows in Apple TV’s library, Silo might be the standout. Based on a trilogy of novels by Hugh Howey, the seriestakes place in a hellish landscape. Humanity has retreated to “Silos,” massive bunkers built to withstand the terrors of the outside world. Nobody knows how they came to live in the Silos, or what turned the world into a living nightmare. Eventually, Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson), an engineer who keeps the Silo running, starts to learn that everything isn’t as it seems. One sentence perfectly captures the web of secrets and danger that’s the backbone of Silo.
That quote is spoken in the Season 1 episode “The Relic,” when Juliette’s former lover, George Wilkins (Ferdinand Kingsley), says, “What if everything you know to be true, everything you’ve been told by the people you love, was in fact just one big lie?” While earlier episodes of Silo established that those in power might be hiding the truth about what happened to the world, George’s quote fundamentally reshapes the series’ approach. Nearly every character in Silo hides something, and it shapes how they see the world and each other.
George’s Quote in ‘Silo’ Has Plenty of Layers

From the beginning of Silo, it’s clear that not everything is as it seems. The pilot episode “Freedom Day” focuses on a young woman who encounters George and other Silo workers who believe the world outside isn’t as deadly as it’s been painted to be. That’s proven true in the following episode, “Holston’s Pick,” where law enforcement officer Holston Becker (David Oyewolo) discovers that instead of a war-torn landscape, the outside of the Silo thrives with plant life.3 Seasons Later, ’Silo’s Best LineFuture episodes continue to reveal the depth of the deception; “The Relic” reveals that everyone in the Silo is under surveillance, and that the population is fed drugs that suppress their memories.
On another level, George’s quote also shows that nobody in Silo can be trusted. During “The Relic,” Juliette encounters an ex-girlfriend of George’s who reveals just how obsessed he was with learning the truth, to the point where he was using said ex to procure illegal relics. He said that you can’t trust the people you love, which extends to the people uncovering the conspiracy as well as the ones enacting it. Silo doesn’t shy away from the fact that Juliette has had to make some hard choices in her quest to uncover the truth, and it doesn’t shy away from the price of that truth, either.

Image via Apple TVThe unfolding maze of secrets and lies in Silo keeps fans coming back, and it continues to dominate Apple TV’s streaming charts. All good things must come to an end, though, as the fourth and final season debuts next year. Showrunner Graham Yost previously promised Variety that Season 4 of Silo would wrap up every mystery left in the show’s run and end on a high note.
“It has been a richly rewarding experience to adapt Hugh’s epic novels with our partners at Apple and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring this complete story to the screen over the course of four seasons. With the final two chapters of ‘Silo’, we can’t wait to give fans of the show an incredibly satisfying conclusion to the many mysteries and unanswered questions contained within the walls of these silos.”

Silo Season 3 ended with even more answers and a few questions, including the potential cause of the end of the world. Season 4 has a lot of ground to cover, but it could also throw more than a few curveballs in Juliette’s way. What if she finds that someone close to her is actually a major part of the conspiracy? George’s words about the people you love lying to you loom large; she didn’t really know him, and other elements could further muddy the waters of her memory.
What makes Silo so compelling is that nothing is what it seems. The quote from George further highlights this, especially the fact that part of the series’ draw is uncovering who everyone is and how they fit into this post-apocalyptic tapestry.
