Youri Tielemans has explained why he could not turn down a move to Manchester United this summer.
Tielemans signed for Manchester United fromAston Villa in a £35m deal earlier this summer, after the Red Devils activated his modest release clause at Villa Park.
The 29-year-old’s move came as a surprise, with Manchester United moving quickly to tie up a deal as Michael Carrick reshapes his midfield at Old Trafford.
He made his first appearance for the club as a substitute during the 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain at the weekend.
Tielemans has helped both Leicester City and Aston Villa to major trophies during his time in English football, includingEuropa League success with the latter last season.
The Belgium international admits that success was an ‘amazing’ experience, but said the opportunity to sign for Manchester United was too good to turn down. He expressed his gratitude to Aston Villa but said a move to Manchester represents a step ‘above’.
“I know that at Villa we did amazing things,” Tielemans said toSky Sports.
“We achieved the Europa League win which was great for the club but there are still clubs above Aston Villa, and Manchester United is one of them.
“Especially at this moment, there is a very positive mood in and around the club so I am just hopeful that we can have a great story together.
“Aston Villa is a great club and I owe them the world. They have put me back at my best level so I am very thankful.”
