York prop Vaughan to retire at end of season

York Knights prop Paul Vaughan has announced he will retire from professional rugby league at the end of the season this week.

The 35-year-old Australian joined the Knights for the 2026 Super League season after spending three years at Warrington Wolves.

Vaughan, a former dual Italy and Australia international and New South Wales representative in State of Origin, made his National Rugby League (NRL) debut in 2013 for Canberra Raiders, and enjoyed spells with St George Illawarra and Canterbury Bulldogs before moving to England.

He has been an influential figure for York this term, playing 25 times and scoring seven tries, with the side sitting 10th in their first season in Super League – but Thursday’s fixture against Bradford Bulls at the LNER Community Stadium will be his last.

“Rugby league has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember,” he told the Knights website.

“What started as a childhood dream became a career and a journey I could never have imagined, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have lived it.

“To my family, team-mates, coaches, staff and everyone who has supported me over the years, thank you. You’ve all played a part in a journey I’ll be forever proud of.

“To York Knights, thank you for giving me the opportunity to finish my career doing what I’ve loved since I was a kid. I wish the club, the boys and all the fans nothing but the best moving forward.

“I walk away from the game grateful, proud and with memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.”

Knights head coach Mark Applegarth paid tribute to Vaughan and his impact on the squad this season.

“I can’t speak highly enough of Paul,” Applegarth said. “He chose to join us, over a number of other offers, to challenge himself and he’s certainly done that.

“He’s a man that leads by actions and I’ve really enjoyed coaching him and getting to know him and his family.”
