Yankees should call Orioles to see what they’d want for Adley Rutschman, even if they don’t want to send him to New York

I’m always skeptical about teams in Major League Baseball making trades within the division, especially with the New York Yankees in the American League East.

Not that we’ve never seen it before, but teams in the American League East are typically very competitive, so making trades with one another doesn’t always make much sense.

If the New York Yankees want to do so, however, there are a few teams in the division that could make sense as potential trade partners at this trade deadline. The Yankees have already proven that they’re willing to make the necessary moves to improve on both sides of the baseball, and the expectation is that they’re going to do so once again at this deadline.

The Baltimore Orioles, who have played at a somewhat polarizing clip to start the year, are in a position where they might have to move on from certain guys, and it would make sense to do so.

One of them would be Adley Rutschman, and the Yankees absolutely need a catcher, so trading for him would make a lot of sense. One writer recently predicted that the Orioles would at least move on from him, though he didn’t mention the Yankees as a potential suitor.

“The value of a switch-hitting catcher with Rutschman’s defensive bonafides goes without saying. But he’s also in the penultimate year of his contract, with nary a peep out of Baltimore about a potential extension.

“This is the perfect opportunity for the O’s to sell high. Their postseason hopes are fading. This iteration of the core has gone nowhere. Rutschman can net them several high-end prospects from a variety of contenders. Baltimore needs pitching most of all. This feels like a wise solution,” Cristopher Kline wrote.

My idea here would be to bring Rutschman in for the Yankees and hope that he does what everybody knows he can.

There have been some struggles with the switch-hitting catcher over the past two and a half years or so, but there have also been moments when he’s continued to prove that he’s one of the better catchers in baseball behind the plate.

The Yankees would be making a significant upgrade behind the plate by replacing Austin Wells with him, so that would be a lot of fun as well.
