Left 4 Dead proved to be a legendary series (albeit one cut criminally short), with its tight first-person controls, unique characters, ramping difficulty, and numerous levels, each with its own series of increasingly enjoyable objectives, serving to offer an infinitely replayable and surprisingly narrative-forward experience. It is a shame, then, that while there have been a few games that have attempted to ape its success, the buck largely stopped with Valve’s incredible zombie co-op title.
Beyond the rumblings of a potential upcoming Left 4 Dead sequel, it seemed as if there was no hope of changing that. However, a brand-new zombie co-op game could offer fans a slight reprieve, an opportunity to relive their glory days blasting zombies with friends in Left 4 Dead, albeit with a touch of Minecraft thrown into the mix. If that merging of genres appeals to you, then this new free FPS game could be for you.
Minecraft Meets Left 4 Dead Makes For A Great Co-Op Zombie Shooter

Mortuus is a fascinating experiment, as it feels like the kind of game Left 4 Dead likely would have been if it launched today. It blends contemporary concepts and innovations to offer a co-op experience designed to be replayed infinitely, with procedural generation, randomized encounters, and varied scenarios that evoke the same feelings as a roguelike or the aforementioned Minecraft. Of course, the only key difference is that this is a first-person shooter where you blast the heads of zombies and not a relaxing survival crafting game.
That’s not to say that Mortuus is a roguelike, but rather that its inheriting of the genre’s conventions elevates its ambitions of being a fun co-operative experience. So do its simple yet effective Minecraft-esque blocky visuals, as they both reduce the system requirements (a requisite to be a successful co-op game these days) and inject the game’s dystopian, ever-changing world with a touch of character. For those who don’t know, Mortuus is a wave-based co-op zombie shooter like Left 4 Dead with procedurally generated levels, unique zombie types, bosses, and more.
There’s also a dismemberment system that sees zombie heads burst from their necks, as well as numerous secrets to discover, tucked somewhere amidst the shifting corridors and labyrinthine layout. Each wave, players earn a certain amount of points which can be used to unlock doors, purchase new weapons, and clear debris. The goal is to survive long enough and somehow work your way through the Daedalian construction, a near-impossible task that feels like a merging of both COD Zombies and Left 4 Dead.
Mortuus Is A Fun Co-Op Experience

Mortuus truly is a lot of fun, a simple yet feature-rich experience that harkens back to the simplicity of COD’s heyday. Much like its co-op contemporaries, Mortuus understands that a well-crafted yet easy-to-grasp experience is far more effective than an overly complex, systems-based game, and executes this vision with aplomb. Its wide array of weapon types, enemies, and perks blends perfectly with the infinitely complex yet superficially simple procedural generation to offer an experience that you will genuinely want to keep returning to with friends, so long as killing zombies is your thing.
Fortunately, Mortuus is currently completely free-to-play. The full game isn’t out yet (it has the tentative release date of “Coming Soon”), but its demo is, offering players a compelling slice of the final product that can be played infinitely with friends. It is available via Steam and can be played solo for those who prefer to face overwhelming odds alone. Surprisingly, this makes Mortuus’ demo one of the best free games like Minecraft, although it really is in the visuals alone.
Mortuus is really for those who’ve been longing for a return to Call of Duty: Zombies’ glory days or to see the likes of Left 4 Dead revived in some form. It’s a co-op shooter that revels in gore, tense encounters, and hordes of enemies, designed with all players in mind, with low-end system requirements and easy-to-learn gameplay ensuring everyone is welcome to the party. If you’ve been looking for something like Left 4 Dead to play with some friends, be sure to give Mortuus a go.
