Aaron Judge did not wait for a phone call or a formal meeting to let his manager know he was ready, he simply showed up. Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed that his captain appeared at his hotel door in San Diego on Friday night, moments after center fielder Trent Grisham limped out of the game with a hamstring strain.

Judge’s message was clear and concise. He was ready to play the next day.

Boone pushed the idea away. As eager as he was to get the three-time AL MVP back in the lineup, there were still a few boxes left to check on a comeback from a fractured right rib that had sidelined Judge since May 31. A rushed road return was a risk the Yankees would not take with the postseason near.

Instead, Boone ran his process. He sat down with Judge one on one, then worked through the chain of voices that needed to weigh in.

“He and I, just he and I together talking about it. And then I spoke individually with Brett McCabe, tell me what you’re seeing, and tell me what he’s been through,” Boone said. He then looped in the training staff, general manager Brian Cashman, and owner Hal Steinbrenner.

The final 24 hours mattered most. Boone wanted to see Judge face live arms and replicate the demands of playing defense before signing off, given the slugger first hurt the rib diving for a flyball.

Judge cleared those hurdles. He took batting practice at Yankee Stadium on Monday’s off day, was reinstated that night, and returned to the lineup Tuesday against the Colorado Rockies, batting third and back in right field for the first time in 99 days.

The timing carries weight. New York’s offense sputtered without him, leaning heavily left-handed and giving opposing pitchers room to attack the rest of the order. Boone has noted that Judge’s presence alone nets better at-bats for the hitters around him. Getting Judge back now, with roughly three weeks left in the season, gives Boone runway to build his captain up before October.

The knock on the door was only the opening pitch.
