Watching the Dallas Cowboys lately, it is hard to miss the gap between what Dak Prescott is doing and what the team is getting out of it.
The quarterback can move the offense. But that does not mean much when the defense keeps giving opponents chances to answer. And when Dallas loses, Prescott is one of the first players that people will scrutinize.
Former NFL defensive tackle Breiden Fehoko thinks that criticism misses a major part of the problem.
Breiden Fehoko Blames Cowboys Defense for Wasting Dak Prescott’s Production
Breiden Fehoko came to Dak Prescott’s defense after Dallas Cowboys lost 24-16 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 5, arguing that the quarterback could have accomplished much more with a capable defense behind him.
“If Dak Prescott had a defense, these Cowboys would have 2 Super Bowls by now,”Fehoko wrote on X.
His criticism was not limited to the defense’s overall performance, which ranks second-to-last in PFN NFL Defense Impact%20assigns,red%20zone%20and%20third%20downs.) entering Week 5.
Fehoko also called out a specific third-down situation against Tampa Bay, questioning the decision to leave so much space for the Buccaneers to exploit.
“3rd & 21 and the Cowboys defense is playing 30 yards off. The Bucs convert with ease. I wish I was rage-baiting right now. You can’t make this up,” he wrote.
The complaint fits a broader problem Dallas has struggled to solve. Prescott has produced at a high level, ranking fourth in PFN NFL QB Impact with a grade of 82.3 entering Week 5. But the team has repeatedly failed to get the defensive support needed to turn offensive production into victories.

During the 2025 season, Prescott threw for 4,552 yards and 30 touchdowns, yet the Cowboys finished 7-9-1 and missed the playoffs.
Dallas’ defense allowed 511 points that season, an average of 30.1 per game, ranking last in the NFL entering Week 5. The unit also surrendered 4,276 passing yards, another league-worst mark.
Meanwhile, the offense averaged 27.7 points per game, leaving Dallas with little margin for error whenever its defense struggled.
The problems have carried into 2026. The Cowboys are allowing 28 points and 389.5 yards per game, ranking 28th and 30th in those categories, respectively. These numbers help explain why criticism has focused on the defense rather than treating Prescott as the sole reason for the team’s results.
Earlier, Prescott had also voiced frustration over his production not translating into wins, admitting he could not directly connect his play to the Cowboys’ results.
“One of the first seasons, if not the first of my career, I can’t directly correlate my play to the wins or losses, or the end of the season, or overall success of the season, Prescott said in January.
This frustration does not absolve Prescott of responsibility for his own mistakes. But Fehoko’s argument is that Dallas cannot expect its quarterback to compensate for every defensive breakdown.
Until the Cowboys find a way to get both units working together, even strong performances from Prescott may continue to produce disappointing results.
