It wasn’t the most ideal start to England’s Round of 32 clash when DR Congo’s Brian Cinpenga fired his nation ahead on seven minutes with a shot that squeezed past Jordan Pickford at the near post.
Thomas Tuchel’s side looked to retaliate as quickly as possible, but an organised DR Congo defence proved difficult to penetrate.
England’s best chances of the opening 45 minutes began with a Marcus Rashford shot at the back post which was cleared off the line by Aaron Wan-Bissaka on 35 minutes.
His effort was followed up a few minutes later with a duo of Jude Bellingham headers.
Both were denied by DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi who pulled off two incredible reactionary saves to keep his nation ahead at the break.
After relentless waves of attacks and the addition of fresh legs on the wings in the second half, England’s hard work was finally rewarded on 75 minutes.
Substitute Anthony Gordon floated a ball into the six-yard box from the left and England skipper Harry Kane rose the highest to head the Three Lions level.
Tuchel’s side used the equaliser to boost their performance for a final time in search of a late winner to avoid extra-time and it was once again Kane who showcased his talent up top on 86 minutes.
The Bayern Munich forward fired a fierce effort into the back of the DR Congo net to send the thousands of England fans in attendance into a frenzy.
With six minutes of added time, Guéhi and O’Reilly helped England hold firm at the back as the Three Lions confirmed their place in the next round.
England will now begin preparations for their Round of 16 clash against Mexico. The clash will take place at the Mexico City Stadium on Monday 6 July, with kick-off set for 01:00 (UK).
