“One of the best clubs in the world” — Marco Palestra explains why he chose Chelsea over Inter and Premier League rival

Marco Palestra has said he felt the energy that Chelsea wanted him more than rival sides after signing for the club from Atalanta.

Palestra has completed a £47m move to Stamford Bridge, becoming Xabi Alonso’s first major signing.

The 21-year-old had a breakthrough campaign on loan at Cagliari in 2025/26 and was namedSerie A Defender of the Year for the campaign. He made his senior debut for Italy in March, before transfer approaches emerged from clubs across Europe.

Palestra had interest fromSerie A champions Inter Milan and an unnamed Premier League side, but decided on Chelsea after a positive approach from the Blues.

He said he is delighted to have signed for ‘one of the best clubs in the world’ and said Chelsea’s strong interest lured him to West London.
