Former Portugal midfielder, Maniche articulated the reasons Cristiano Ronaldo is deserving of a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 41-year-old is poised to participate in a record-extending sixth edition of the quadrennial tournament.
Ronaldo, who currently plays club football for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, holds the title of the all-time top scorer in football history, with an impressive total of 973 goals for both club and country.
In an exclusive interview with Flash Score, Maniche elaborated on why the five-time Ballon d’Or recipient should be included in the 2026 FIFA World Cup:
“In my opinion, Cristiano Ronaldo must play. As long as he possesses the desire and ambition to represent the national team, he should continue to do so. He is an exceptional player. While it is true that he may not have the same physical vitality as he did 20 years ago, he still compels opponents to remain vigilant and creates opportunities for his teammates.
“We must show respect, and I believe there is often a lack of intellectual honesty in discussions about him. He continues to be a reference point and remains significant for the national team. I do not see any other striker who surpasses him. Ultimately, it is the coach’s responsibility to manage the team effectively.”
Ronaldo and his teammates will commence their quest for a first World Cup title against DR Congo in their Group K opener on June 16 in Houston. Uzbekistan and Colombia are the other teams competing in the group.
