Wolverine's Hardcore New Design Debuts Today

Marvel unveils Wolverine‘s latest redesign, honoring the most controversial of Logan’s appearances. Wolverine stands out among the Marvel Universe’s hundreds of superheroes due to his animalistic physique. Logan’s trademark wing-tipped hairstyle and mutton chops make him unmistakable even when he isn’t wearing a costume, and his short, stocky, heavily muscled frame covered in thick body hair project the image of a tireless brawler. Across several color palettes and variations, Wolverine’s flared mask is so unique that any similar design only looks like a copycat.

Throughout the years, Wolverine has cycled through several iconic outfits, from the classic blue-and-yellow uniform that he always reverts to, to the emblematic 1980s John Byrne tan-and-brown costume that offers a more earthy color palette. For covert wet-work operations, Wolverine’s sleek, black-and-grey X-Force uniform is a masterpiece of stealth design, as it replaces the bright heroic colors with muted tones and glowing red eye lenses. Wolverine’s civilian attire usually consists of a weathered brown leather jacket, a plain flannel shirt, blue jeans, and a cowboy hat, all of them regular clothes that become instantly recognizable when they’re worn by the clawed mutant.

As is usual for every major comic book character, Wolverine has had several controversial redesigns throughout the years. Still, Wolverine is so popular that even his most unpopular looks are worthy of a second chance later down the line.

Wolverine has regained his healing factor following his encounter with the Adamantine, and he has recovered his broken adamantium claw to boot. However, Logan’s woes don’t stop there. After facing the adamantium-coated Solem and successfully fending off Madame Masque and the Rose while they were trying to acquire a rare bottle of wine, Wolverine realizes he smelled the bottle’s contents, which leads him to unleash his long-suppressed “feral” form.

Wolverine’s feral form is one of his most divisive designs. Introduced in 1996’s Wolverine #100 after Magneto ripped the adamantium from his skeleton, Logan’s feral form represents his true nature, as the only thing preventing it from surfacing is the toxicity of adamantium and his constantly active healing factor. With no adamantium to fight, Wolverine’s body evolves into an animalistic mutant, with a hunched back, flatter head, and a notably absent nose.

X-Men only teases Logan’s new feral form design, which will be unveiled in detail in Wolverine #30. Over the next three issues, Wolverine will have to fight his animal impulses to avoid becoming an even worse killer than his enemies. According to Wolverine ‘s solicitation, Logan will receive “help from an unexpected ally,” who will offer him “a way out.” The main cover for Wolverine #32 features feral Wolverine and Sabretooth fighting together.

Sabretooth is one of the cruelest villains in X-Men lore, and he has a particular fixation on tormenting Wolverine with his bloodthirst. Now that Wolverine has lost control, it seems like Victor Creed will end up being the voice of reason, though the reason why Logan’s archnemesis steps in to help instead of Wolverine’s dozens of mutant and non-mutant friends is yet to be revealed. Perhaps after the events of Wolverine , Sabretooth will remain a temporary ally to Logan and the X-Men.
