Wolverine and Cyclops Just Suffered Their Darkest Deaths in Marvel History

In the vast Marvel Multiverse, there are many timelines where stalwart X-Men leader Cyclops has been killed off, where even Wolverine’s incredible healing factor has failed him. Now, Marvel has delivered what might be the most gruesome deaths any version of either character has ever faced. Proceed with caution, because you’re going to need a hug after getting a glimpse of this.

That’s just a little play on words to lighten the mood. See, in this particular timeline, Cyclops and Wolverine didn’t die fighting Sentinels, or fighting some hardcore new incarnation of the Brotherhood of Mutants.

Instead, they went up against the legendary monsters from another major pop culture franchise: Alien. More details spoilered below, but the TL;DR of it all is, the outcome was catastrophic for the X-Men.

The truly wild thing? It didn’t even take a fully grown Xenomorph to take out the heroes, let alone a swarm of them. All it took was a couple of facehuggers, and their acid blood, and Cyclops and Wolverine were both cooked.

Warning! Spoilers and graphic imagery from Aliens vs. X-Men ahead!

A Horde Of Facehuggers Take Out Cyclops And Wolverine Easily & Brutally

Readers should rightfully go into Alien vs. X-Men #2 expecting carnage (not the Marvel villain, just the general concept), but to lose Cyclops and Wolverine so early in the story is a shocker. (Again, concept, not villain.) For Scott Summers, his death is completely gnarly, but also completely fitting, given his power set and the nature of his enemy.

After all, why is he called Cyclops? Where do his powers emanate from? And what does a facehugger do? And what happens when you hurt a facehugger? Yeah. Put all of those pieces together. When Scott is attacked by one of the creatures, he reacts instinctively, trying to blast it off his face with his optic beams. Instead, the result is that his own head explodes in a shower of viscera, as it is consumed by the facehugger’s acid blood.

Like we said, gnarly. It is a horrifying image, with the decapitated Cyclops holding his hands out in front of him like Pamala Voorhees in Friday the 13th, as it takes a second for his body to grasp the fact that he’s dead. Nightmare-fuel stuff in which Alien vs. X-Men lives up to its potential and then some.

The X-Men Franchise Just Made Alien’s Facehuggers More Dangerous Than Ever

“Logan did what he did,” Beast narrates in a later scene, referencing Wolverine’s monike as the “best at what he does.” “I really thought he could win,” Beast adds. This is laid over a panel of Wolverine fighting an encroaching onslaught of facehuggers. Unfortunately, at least in this Marvel Universe, there are limits to Logan’s healing factor. It becomes a numbers game, and a war of attrition, but eventually the facehuggers overwhelm him.

“The acid was just too much,” Beast explains, as the art depicts Wolverine melted down to a mess of organs and adamantium, more intense imagery that capitalizes on the crossover’s premise in a spectacular way. No disrespect to Wolverine or Cyclops, because they went out fighting, but Alien vs. X-Men also elevates the facehugger stage of the Xenomorph life cycle, making them just as might of an unstoppable fighting force as the later stages of their evolution.

Which, of course, is what is in store for the mutant heroes next as they seek to regroup and fight back. Facehuggers are just the start when it comes to space’s deadliest killing machines. Oh, and speaking of machines, remember we mentioned the mutant-killing robot Sentinels earlier? The synopsis for Alien vs. X-Men #3 says they’re about to join the fray, complicating things even further for the surviving X-Men, as they try to survive against adult Xenomorphs without their leader Cyclops or their best fighter Wolverine.

Aliens vs. X-Men #2 is available now from Marvel Comics.
