Viola Davis is rightfully regarded as one of the best actors of the modern day, having earned the famous Triple Crown of Acting (consisting of an Academy Award, an Emmy, and a Tony Award in acting categories) alongside a wide assortment of other recognitions, making the matter of what comes next for Davis a naturally exciting matter.
Though Viola Davis has had an industrious and expansive career since she began appearing on the big and small screens in the 90s, the actor shows no sign of stopping, and indeed is attached to a range of projects that offer us the chance to see more of her acting talents. As has been the case for the rest of Davis’ career, these in the works projects span a wide assortment of genres, meaning the breadth of Viola Davis’ acting abilities will once again be displayed over the course of the next few years too.
Indeed, one of the most impressive things about Viola Davis’ career is that she can flip between decidedly different roles and genres one after another while giving them her all. This has been a key factor in Davis winning so many awards over the years, and hopefully is a streak that continues with her next roles in both various movies and on television.
Children Of Blood And Bone

The upcoming 2027 movie adaptation of Children of Blood and Bone – which is set to release on January 15 – is a promising prospect for the year. The original 2018 novel has already received notable praise, both for the strength of its storytelling, and for the way in which its fantasy world and fictional country of Orïsha draw from West African mythology and the Yoruba culture, as well as exploring themes around racism in a poignant way.
With all of this in mind, the movie seems to have the perfect blueprint for a film that could resonate with audiences in a range of different ways, and provide a fantasy film that feels fresh and exciting because of how it forgoes much of the genre’s more stereotypical subject matter.
This seems to be doubly the case given the talented cast of actors that have been revealed to be taking on roles in Children of Blood and Bone, which includes Viola Davis playing the role of Mama Agba, the mentor and adoptive mother figure of protagonist Zélie Adebola. Davis’ casting is particularly exciting, as Children of Blood and Bone writer Tomi Adeyemi mentioned in 2019 that the famous actor would be her dream casting for the role of Mama Agba (as per the Chicago Tribune), which makes it coming to fruition all the more of a big deal.

Viola Davis has been attached to the adaptation of 2016 romance novel I Almost Forgot About You since 2017, wherein reports emerged that Davis would star in and produce the film via production company JuVee Productions alongside her husband Julius Tennon (as per Variety).
I Almost Forgot About You follows protagonist Georgia, who seeks to rediscover herself and what brings her joy in her life in her early fifties. This requires her to give up some of the comforts of the life she’s built so far, which makes the journey she walks even more notable, and one that has hit home for many readers based on reviews online.
While we’ve heard little about the movie since then, suggesting it could be either subject to a longer production process or potentially fall to the wayside, it’s one that seems as though it could be a hit with audiences based on the reception to the source material, and the book’s feel-good story and message about how it’s never too late to change your life and transform it into what you want it to be.
House Of Games
A remake of the 1987 American neo-noir House of Games was reported to be in development at Amazon MGM Studios in 2025, with Viola Davis and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II co-starring and co-producing the film (via Deadline).
The original House of Games certainly sets the stage for a very dramatic upcoming movie remake. Its story of psychiatrist Dr. Margaret Ford becoming enamored with the world of con artists and learning how to pull the wool over the eyes of others is one that’s endlessly compelling, and that depicts a complex, nuanced protagonist who you can’t help but remain invested in long after things start to take a turn for the worse.
Based on how character-focused this story is – and how well Davis is able to play complex characters with a level of charisma that makes them even more engaging – it’s a premise it’d be interesting to see Viola Davis take on with her usual acting prowess. This is doubly true with the added benefit of having Yahya Abdul-Mateen II acting alongside her, as the latter has also repeatedly proven himself in the acting world.

Upcoming Paramount+ show Ascent was revealed to have been greenlit in August 2026, unveiling that Viola Davis would be playing the lead role of corporate fixer Catriona Vail, who finds herself using the skillset she’s honed over the course of her career when her estranged daughter ends up in danger.
Ascent has a promising roster of names attached to the project outside of Davis, too. For example, creator John Logan is set to also serve as the series’ showrunner, following his prior work as a writer on the likes of prior film hits such as Skyfall and Gladiator, which bodes well in terms of the show sticking to the core concepts behind it, and when it comes to the quality of the script the series will be working with as well.
Similarly, more recent reports in October 2026 have also added Alfred Molina and Selton Mello to the cast roster, further fleshing out our understanding of who will play the bloodthirsty business folk that Ascent is set to revolve around, and showing Davis is set to be able to bounce off other talented and established actors in the series too (via Deadline).

Upcoming movie Ally Clark allows Viola Davis to once again step into the world of thrillers, this time as the titular investigator Ally Clark, who ends up taking on a far more personal case when she looks into the matter of how one of her close friends died in suspicious circumstances, paving the way for said mystery to be at the heart of its story.
Ally Clark looks to be a movie that ties in well to Viola Davis’ strengths as an actor, and her ability to convey three-dimensional characters with utter conviction, which should be to the benefit of Davis and the movie alike.
With other thrillers that have featured Viola Davis – such as 2013’s Prisoners and 2010’s Trust – being some of the most highly-rated additions to her filmography, Ally Clark certainly seems to be set up for success. However, it’s currently unclear when the film’s release window will eventually be, as the June 2026 reports regarding the movie and its story reported the movie was still in development (Deadline), meaning its actual debut could still be some considerable time away.
